That's because the original English langauge advertising agency/ies made it as 'Hi', as an introduction to a new company.

"Old Chumly made a forks pass..." Hey ho! I quite agree; back in the day, the phrases "U" and "non-U" were invented to distinguish between the folks who had been taught the "correct" pronunciation and those who had simply read the word phonetically off the page. It's just another way of establishing your "superiority" and the English language is full of such examples. The names Worcester, Leicester, Leominster, Woolfardisworthy etc. come to mind.

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted June 1, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 1, 2023 I usually get Biopic wrong, I now know that it is Bio Pic. Another one when I was young was chaos. A lot of the family deliberately mispronounced it as Chos - I think it started with a grandparent who had a sense of humour. I learnt eventually, at school how to get it right. I did think "eh?" at the time.

Ozexpatriate
Just about everyone (at least in the US and the UK) gets "Ikea" wrong. It is accepted (and promoted) by the company as "eye-kee-ah" but the original Swedish was intended as "ee-kah-uh". Plenty of online videos. Their advertising in Sweden is closer to the original. Then of course there are the product names.
