Ben Alder
I have been asked by a fellow modeller about the best way to do this, and it is out of my modelling zone any advice would be welcome, thank you.
JohnC
Hi I use liquid Brasso or T Cut on a cotton bud and gently rub away. Leaves a perfect shiny area to apply replacement decal and then seal with a flash over of satin varnish with air brush and you cannot tell loco has been re-numbered. forest2807
With some Bachmann locos the numbers can be removed by gentle but firm pressure with a cocktail stick alone. The numerals seem to crack and flake off due to the friction. If it makes a squeaky noise when you do it then that seems to be about the right amount of pressure. Not scientific I know, but it works for me!

Agreed, although I often find it necessary to very lightly scratch each individual character once with the tip of a scalpel blade so the cocktail stick can 'get a grip' on it, thus avoiding excessive rubbing trying to get the process started.
Ben Alder
Thanks all - I'll pass that on to him, and report back if I hear how he got on.
