Northmoor MPD
Afternoon, I built a micro last year with a winter theme and plenty of snow, unfortunately I didn’t get on with it too well as the glue used to stick the snow down never seemed to go off and caused for sticking points and poor running locomotives, at the start of the year I decided enough was enough and I’d had enough of the snow. I stripped the layout back to baseboards, cleaned the points, replaced some of the track and decided to start on my new project roughly based on a Scottish whisky distillery 🥃 Here are a few photos of my progress so far, still plenty to do but it is starting to shape up nicely. The buildings are scratch built, again roughly based on a few different highland distilleries. This weeks new arrival is a Hattons Barclay still in need of some customisation and weathering. Hopefully in time some Scottish allocated class 25s & 20s will visit too! 13 1

marc smith
Really nice micro layout :) I had wondered about using a double slip, just as you have here.... and I think it looks great. What are the dimensions of the baseboard? PS. The word "distillery" is what immediately grabbed my attention in your thread title lol EDIT: I meant to add, the possibility of using a short cassette each end, really adds to the playability of this micro Edited April 12, 2023 by marc smith

The dimensions are 207 mm x 730 mm with a cassette on the left hand side currently but I do have the option to add another one to the right hand side once I chop the back off the distillery main building, which I may well do. Mine too! The distillery idea came to while while enjoying a fine Scottish dram 😁 Thanks again, Adam

marc smith
Hi Adam, 207mm x 730mm - that is compact, considering what you have included here. Yet the design isn't cramped.... it's really well balanced. I'm looking forward to seeing an overall photo, with the buildings in-situ. As I mentioned, I was wondering about a similar design myself. I was pondering a slightly longer layout, with an additional short radius point. I had envisaged a low wall at the centre, with a recess for a small signal box or covered ground frame. I might well start doodling again, now I have seen that slip work so well just on its' own. I would definitely add a cassette on the right hand side too - but you may not need to chop the building about too much, I hope? I might even start doodling later, and open that nice bottle of Bruichladdich "The Laddie" I picked up for a bargain price last weekend ;) Keep up the good work Adam.... and don't forget to include an overall piccie, with the buildings... when you get chance PS. Isn't it funny that many of us have our best ideas, after a wee dram! lol
Tryfan
Nice layout Adam, I particularly like the water effects. I'll follow with interest. David

As simple as the track layout is I can have plenty of time shunting happily! No minimal modifications needed to put the fiddle yard on the other end, I got carried away with the scenery instead of modifying the building 😂 Very nice! Enjoy the dram! 🥃 all the best ideas come to us after a little whisky! 😁

TechnicArrow
This is a stunning little layout, that ticks all the right boxes - interesting industry, little bridge over a stream, tidy trackwork, and all blended nicely with weathering. The Barclay looks right at home. Well done!
Northmoor MPD
Thanks for all the nice comments! Much appreciated. I’ll keep posting pictures of the progress and an overall picture next time I get it out of its box at the weekend. Here’s a couple of pictures of the yard area, looking quite plain at the minute as I’ve still got to paint and weather it along with adding the whisky barrels and other details! Thanks again all!
RMweb Premium Dava Posted April 13, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 13, 2023 I like the Barclay pug. You could run a Ruston 48 or 88DS (Hornby) as both ran at actual distilleries Dava

RMweb Gold Andrew D Posted April 14, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 14, 2023 Brilliant little layout! I really like it. Right up my street. I love the bridge and the area around it, top job!
luke the train spotter
Beautifully modelled! The layout has so much flow to it. How are you controlling your double slip out of interest?

Hi Luke, Thank you for your kind comment, I have two standard peco point motors mounted below the baseboard, powered off the auxiliary power on my controller. Thanks! Oncomin5torm
This is exactly my kind of layout. I LOVE everything about it, the size, I am so impressed with how much you have fit into a small space, its not even 1m long and its excellent, detail levels are all there. I want one.

Northmoor MPD
Evening all, The weekend just gone I decided to build the Highland railway signal box that will be placed on the mainline section of my micro layout (on the top of the embankment), here are some pictures of the finished article and it’s rough position on the layout. 9
Northmoor MPD
A new arrival at the Distillery too… Hornby Peckett ‘Bear’ a nice little runner and a colour that matches the distillery blue, soon to be renamed ‘Robert Burns’. Here is a few pictures of it on the layout: There is also an overall picture of the layout in its current state from above, this shows the current projects, the mainline railway area at the top left and the area where a low relief engine shed will be at the bottom left (Based on the shed at Dailuaine Distillery). Oncomin5torm
The whole layout looks amazing, pecketts are superb little locos. Would you consider a 48DS Ruston? they are small and compact and would have worked an industry like this. What kit is the signal box? You have built and painted it superbly 1

Either one would compliment the steam loco perfectly! 2
