Joining Cardboard - No Butts

To date I've been using simple butt joints in carboard. The strength lies in the fact that I used several overlapping layers of cardboard, so there is only a joint in 1 layer at any one place. Alternatively, there was another piece at right-angles to give the strength

 

However, I recently had a situation where I had a joint in a single layer of cardboard. This was a simple roof, but it was too long to be cut on my Cricut in a single piece and, in any case, the cereal packets I'm using are not long enough either.

 

To solve this problem I've taken a leaf out of the Ikea playbook (and probably lots of others) and used a 'fingered' joint.

 

Here are the 2 cereal packet parts of the roof:

 

And this is what it looks like when they are pushed together:

 

I'm 'hopeful' that the much longer gluing surface(s) will give suitable strength to this single layer of cardboard. It will be 'skinned' with paper textures top & bottom, so that'll add a bit of strength and hide the joint ...

 

I hope this idea of some use to others.

And here it is in it's 'completed' state as a section of the roof for Burton-on-Trent station Overbridge Building. It's the part that covers The Gallery at the rear (south end) of the building.
