Unless of course she was re-re-numbered in the smaller BR font before Gorton de-streamlined the engine. Though the 'Greens' and Yeadon make no mention of this happening.

Feel really conflicted about this loco.  I have this picture in my head of it crossing north-east London with a rake containing the four BR-numbered Gresley teaks I got with two cutprice 1948 Olympics sets, some of the gorgeous crimson and cream Thompsons and the Rapido BR dynamometer car.  A one-off, of course, and more than a slight stretch of Rule One.  And then there’s the price.  £225 isn’t that much for a loco these days, but will it be another 10800, too niche for its own good, and down to half price before spring comes round?  Decisions, decisions.

With 'East Anglian' arriving today, that completes the trio!

As pointed out above, you might be lucky and get free biscuilts from Derails. There has been discussion elsewhere about people eating baked beans cold. I bet they’re railway modellers saving on gas or electricity as well as wholesome food. I’ve a couple of pre-orders in for Rapido items with money due to be put aside for them this month. I think they might wait another month!

 

It makes you think, though. I bet fat cats are making interest on money lent to Hornby whilst we starve. Addiction is a frightful thing! 🤣

 

By the way, Hornby, should you happen to read this, a newly rebuilt blue W1 with the trailing wheels sorted out would be something I’d buy first and wonder where the money is coming from later.

Looking at both models,Whereas LNER apple green is certainly an attractive livery with prewar valances the model IMHO takes on a bulbous look. The defrocked BR 61670 is thus a more attractive proposition. So for post war ER I need to think closely about coaching stock. About a decade or so ago,Hornby released a few in what they then termed “ ER Teak “ serial numbers R 4598/9/ 4600/01. I don’t believe these were ever repeated.. Locomotion Models we’re selling at an advantageous price….so I bought some. Never run but I think they’re now an incentive

I have one of those 1948 Olympic sets, I no longer need it. Is it worth selling it as is or splitting it up?

Although this is not my thing it's a lovely model and looks to be very well done. While not cheap I don't see the typical retailer price as that expensive in today's market and I can think of far worse ways to spend the money.

Mine arrived yesterday (Sunday), yes it is a nice loco. I preordered it so I paid just less than £190 which seemed ok, I am not sure I would have wanted to pay £250 for it. I did think it might have firebox glow but it doesn't. Then I had the issue of coaches, my Gresley suburban ones are BR. Fortunately I managed to pick up a 1948 Olympics set for a reasonable price which has the correct coaches.( thank you for the info Downer). People on EBay are already seeing an opportunity they are selling for nearly £70 each, buying them as the set with the loco was much cheaper.

As for stock to run behind the B17, this perhaps is an easy option? Witham on an up milk train. I'm assuming loco is in black livery.

Useful photo. Liverpool Street c 1949/50 …..prior to the introduction of Britannias and the train at platform being The East Anglian in c&c Gresleys.I imagine 61659 will shortly be homeward bound to Norwich at its head. What a dingy place it then was. But full of character nonetheless,As is my new gleaming Hornby model .Beautifully finished ,smooth runner.

Oh. I do like that.

Living in Billericay in the late 1940s I remember the appearance of a few locomotives in post war green as an improvement on the grot. I never saw anything like that. Though the inhabitants of Devons Road ran it close.

Very temping just to try.
