50025
Last one I saw in ‘real life action’ ie. Not preserved 50003. Would also be good to see the ‘celebrity’ ones 50033, D400, 50015, 50008 and 50019. Don’t ask for much do I?! Seriously, I would happily buy one of each (although obviously would need to hide my bank statements!) 4

The last one I caught on a service train and not a railtour - 50027, 3 May 1991. Part of that journey was an arranged cab-ride, my friend Steve Ireland and the Traction Inspector who accompanied us are in shot. 9

Popular Post Rugd1022
Some more gratuitous Hoover imagery, somewhere I have a small booklet on the class which gives the order of refurbishments and repaints into large logo livery, as we know 006 was the first one to be refurbished but didn't receive large logo livery until 1984... '012 at Royal Oak looking rather swish... not sure of the date but the trackwork into Ranelagh Bridge SP is still in situ... '019 at St.Erth in 1980 - not my photo but it reminds me of the period when I was well and truly into bashing the class down in the South West (after the beloved Westerns had gone) we had to rely on word of mouth or someone with access to Tops to work out the best moves, and the atmosphere down there was always memorable with a 50 up front on late night runs through the county... those newfangled high intensity headlamps were a real novelty at the time and the first sighting of one coming up the bank into Bodmin Road would give a clue as to which loco it might be... '022 and -031 in the Factory at Old Oak... '026 at Padd... Edited August 20, 2023 by Rugd1022
Rugd1022
A close up of 50 033 I took in July 2005 when it was still hidden away at Swindon Museum... It always seemed to be one of the better examples we had at Old Oak, I remember having it on the early morning Padd - New Street job in late October '83 with Driver Eddie Massey and in his capable hands it flew down the Thames Valley at the start of the trip. On the way back I was in the chair from Leamington and it breezed all the way back to Padd, where we arrived almost ten minutes early. Some of them really were flyers and could take a fair bit of punishment on certain jobs. John Vaughan's 1983 book on Cornwall has some great 50 photos within, in fact twenty eight of the class are featured in it, plus of course numerous Hydraulics, 37s, 47s etc...

For me, 50042 and 50046 were consistently fast. Presumably an effect of the lens or angle the photo was taken, but both the headlight and foot hold appear to be off centre and the latter crooked!

Popular Post Rugd1022
50 015 at Penzance on 15th January 1989, taken by my brother - it's seen better days, the grey roof has a lot of ingrained dirt but there's still no orange cantrail stripe, note the bent footstep in the second photo... And another of mine - 50 008 hasn't faired much better but still wears it's ship's crest at Exeter in August 1989... Popular Post Rugd1022
This OLE warning flash came from 50 012 at Vic Berry's in April '89, they didn't stay white for long...! 50 018 running round its train at Exeter in appalling weather, when the NSE livery first appeared I lost interest for a while, then my brother drove the point home that they were by now very much in their twilight years, so I went with him on a few trips and bagged some more miles behind them before it was too late, I'm very glad I did now... If I do ever get round to building a layout (or at the very least a decent enough plank with some track on it) I'll be using this image as my colour pallet for the infrastructure... 'Mr.Elgar' on the same dank awful day at Exeter... And on to Plymouth, with 'Victorious' in shabby chic...
Popular Post Rugd1022
Some photos I've (at long last) managed to retrieve from my long dormant flickr account, taken around Padd and Old Oak in 1988 and 89... Rugd1022
'Howe' at St.Austell, not long after being released from Donny Works in the newfangled large logo livery in 1980... 'Formidable' at Exeter St.Davids on 28th May 1982... Another preservation era shot of 50 042 at Bodmin (Road!) Parkway I took back in March 2007, it shows very well the 'droop' of the front screens which the Hornby model doesn't quite capture... 15
Rugd1022
Photo by Chris 'The Mighty Hood' from his flickr page : 'Hercules' in platform 1a at Padd on the night of 25th November 1983, two days after 'Bulwark' derailed with the up sleeper, this is one of the few services allowed into Padd while the recovery was underway, it only wore this livery for eleven months until the GWR green was applied in February 1984... Photo by David Rostance : three LL Vacs for the price of one, with 43, 26 and 3 facing west at Exeter St.Davids on a rather damp 22nd December 1984... Photo by Stephen Dance : 'Tiger' at Old Oak c.1982... Photo by Graham Williams : 50 009 storming along the sea wall in September 1976... D826
I just love the picture of 50009 on the seawall just past Rockstone Bridge. Proper livery, proper train. Takes me right back. I expect a Western will be along in a few minutes. Those were the days. Lots of variety in locos and trains. 50s, Westerns, 47s, 46s, 45s, 31s, 25s, 33s, 08s, all to be seen on the seawall. Always remember an 08 scuttling along from the Warren, presumably NA bound. Cracking images. Thanks for posting all. 3
Rugd1022
Another one from 'Chris The Mighty Hood's' flickr pages : 50 010 storming through Southall c.1983, with four up in the cab, probably Old Oak men on a jolly... from around September that year it had a blue roof, applied at Landore I believe... Photographer unknown : 'St.Vincent' at Old Oak on 23rd June 1984, not too many yards away I'd have been supping tea in the mess room trying to beat 'Fangs' and 'Fast Eddie' at cards... Photo by Syd Young at 50 007 at Totnes with the down motorailer on 28th August 1982, easily recognisable by the patches on the front of the cab... Photo by 'Stanners 1092' on flickr : 50 011 on the blocks at Penzance on 8th July 1979, with the original large arrow logo showing through, new logo amidships and domino headcodes, it was the last one to be named the following month... Photo by Troy Trevains : 50 017 and 50 030 at Penzance in July 1981, note that although refurbished '17 hasn't had the front sandbox fillers plated over... Photographer unknown : 'Revenge' takes rest at Old Oak on 12th March 1983... 17

This is the 'dented' end of 50033 where an unfortunate person was hit on the line, it was re-panelled when the Fifty Fund took it on long term loan, along with replacing the grabrails at the other end that 50033 had lost. The pre-stressed metal over a frame meant the panels were easily dented by contact 1
