Going2theDogs
Hi All, Here’s a question which I know is going to be subjective, but……. What is the best Hornby Flying Scotsman. My particular brief is as follows: 1, In BR Brunswick Green. 2, Era 8 or 9. 3, With German smoke deflectors. 4, Loco drive. 5, ‘Full fat’ version (not Railroad). Looking forward to your feedback. I think I like my weathered 1963 pre-servation version. But I'd like to see a full fat, updated 1968 Pegler version.
rogerzilla
Have they ever made a decent LNER apple green A3 version without smoke deflectors? It was only like that during 1947.

Then renumbered 103 on 5/5/1946. I would wait until they inevitable release one using the new tooling. Probably in the next announcement in January. Or as another NRM exclusive. I think the problem with FS is that the Pegler-era version is the most remembered, and that was a mongrel. 4472, A3, banjo dome, LNER apple green, but those odd red nameplates. Going Spare
The only time Flying Scotsman appeared as 103 in LNER green was in 2000 when R2146 was released as a millenium model with gold plated metalwork (round dome, no smoke deflectors, tender drive). It's how it was when I was growing up - so "wrong but right" for me. Can't stand it in BR green with elephan ears.
RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted September 28, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 28, 2022 I wouldn’t be surprised for next year if Hornby did every version of FS livery that she has appeared in over her entire lifetime.
GernBlanstonShow
I adore my NRM late 2000's Scotsman, R2441. The combination of LNER Apple green and Modern features like the smoke deflectors, double chimney, and overhead warning signs really does it for me. Definitely deserves to get better photos. Being born in 1991 my first impression of f.s was as 4472, LNER apple green and that will always be its 'correct' livery for me. Much the same as Mallard (4468 LNER garter blue) - anything else to me would just be wrong! My suggestions for your brief would be: R3202 (NRM weathered version) or R3503 (NRM locomotion version) I do not own either so can't comment on detail etc but I'd say they both look the part.
Going2theDogs
Hi All, Regarding K Hatton post above & the NRM FS with support coach (R3503). FS is in a ‘gloss’ finish (which received mixed reviews if I recall correctly). What time line is this supposed to represent? Thanks in advance. I have no idea whether it exactly matches the same livery as previously carried as things like warning patches do change over time. https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/60103-flying-scotsman-gner-1472-lner-1472-lner-4472-lner-503-lner-103-br-e103-br-60103/ I assume it will emerge from the overhaul in the same livery. In LNER days she started with a GNR coal rail tender as 1472, then 4472, LNER with corridor tender then another GN followed by the streamlined non corridor she kept till withdrawal. Steamport Southport
Tenders and boilers? Look here. https://www.brdatabase.info/locoqry.php?action=locodata&type=S&id=600112003&loco=1472 It's correct as it tallies with the RCTS green book and Yeadons Register. Standards_in_OO
I’m hoping for one of the preservation era versions to be released again next year, preferably in its current condition as that one hasn’t been available new for a while now. I would have thought given next year is FS’s century, Hornby will be all over it!
RMweb Premium Johan DC Posted September 30, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 30, 2022 My prefered one is R3637, I really lookes the part, with the GN-tender with the number on it. Unfortunately, the running plate is of the 'wavy navy' type. So I passed on it. Hope they make it with the new metal one some day
RMweb Premium Dominion Posted October 1, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 1, 2022 Assume you mean R3736, the one modelling the GN height cab and chimney, before they were lowered.
