The Wagon Repair Shop

My friend acquired these wagon parts in a box of assorted model railway bits given to him by a neighbour.

The PO wagons are by Peco with a metal chassis and cardboard sides.

The red box van bodies are ex Hornby Dublo breakdown train tool vans I think.

There is also a white metal six wheeled van built from a kit with a wooden chassis base.

Finally there is a metal mineral truck body.

The plan is to refurb/repaint/paint these wagons with new metal wheels and couplings and get them running on the layout.

 

To that end I have obtained a few of these:-

You will not thank me for pointing this out, but .... it was extremely unusual for the load / number to have a black background on a bauxite, fitted wagon.

 

I know that the HD body has a moulded panel for the load / number, but this is easily carved away.

 

The P-prefixed numbers are also an anachronism on BR-built wagons.

Yet somehow I don’t care.  Plus some of the numbers are different on either side of each wagon.

 

This was just a fun project restoring the contents of someone’s box of junk back into service rather than an exercise in prototypical accuracy.

Peco chassis, I'd forgotten all about those! Great result. I noticed the numbering and guessed that you were using up some spare transfers, on the grounds that any numbers were better than none. We all accumulate part-used transfer sheets, I have a box file full of them - whether I use them at random or purchase yet more depends on the importance of the project in hand, but I do try to get them right(ish) with what I have if I can.

These van bodies were decent mouldings (a pity about the roof ribs though), I have five obtained as unpainted Wrenn mouldings for a pound each ages ago, four went on Bachmann chassis which I handpainted with Humbrol 133 satin brown I think, two coats went on so well you'd think they'd been sprayed. Why can't enamel paint be that good any more? The fifth body has too many broken stanchions but you've suggested the obvious solution for that one 🙂

I have another done some years before these and modified as an insulated van in white, with the end vents carved away and the ribs reinstated with plastic rod scraped flat - it looks fine and is one of those projects I doubt I could get right if I ever tried it again.....!

Always nice to see old stuff getting a new lease of life, keep up the good work!

Meanwhile back on the workbench, I think that this may be an old K’s white metal kit of a GWR Siphon O2.

If the axles are the right length, what about grinding out the bottoms of the axle boxes on one side, fitting the bearings into the other side - offer up the axles with the wheels in place  and then, with a bearing on other other end of the axle, slide that into the axle box and fill the gap to hold the bearing in place. That is unless you are going for a nice brass compensated chassis. As I remember those old K's kits you might even find you can bend the axle box W frame units outwards to pop the axles in. With an old white metal model that might be risky.

I had one of their GWR six-wheeled coaches. I had to make the centre wheels flangeless to stop it rocking about and derailing on points. It was so heavy that it always had to be next to the engine, or it pulled everything else off the track on corners.

Thanks Phil, that sounds like a good idea.  I had thought about bending the w-irons out to fit the wheels and then pushing then back, but, as you say that could be a risky procedure.

 

Thinking about a floating centre wheel but there may not be enough sideplay for it to go around curves smoothly.  The flangeless centre wheel option may be the best way forward.

So if you are sticking with the PECO parts you need a Parkside LNER 10ft vacuum fitted chassis and it should be bauxite. I don't think any were unfitted.
