@john new - do you know if any small stools \ steps will be available for small children to use.

Thanks

Haven’t been told they aren’t and I am assuming they will be as they are YMRS stock. On the website as a service we will be providing.

@john new  Might it be worth putting a link to the exhibition website in your footer message?

And, if easily available, web links to pictures and/or videos of the layouts?  Appreciate that is more work but quite a number of the layouts listed don’t sound familiar to me.

Just a couple of thoughts to try and help encourage visitors!

A nice number of layouts but where are the N gauge ones. Only one.......it is a popular scale you know!

Dave

According to the list there are two - Ripponden and Staly Vegas - plus the superb 2mm finescale York.

OK, it’s two plus a small 2mm diaroma. Still less N than many other exhibitions, which I believe is quite normal for York?

Dave

Whatever blend of scales and themes our Show Manager picks will disappoint someone, if you think you want more N Gauge than we are offering there are specialist N Gauge shows or build one portable, of suitable quality to be shown and offer it.

As for calling the The York for York in 2023 2FS layout a small diorama from the descriptions on here and elsewhere it hardly seems fair to describe it as that. An interesting and intriguing concept which I think will be stunning. See thread on here.

Peter's York model is soooo very much more than a "small diorama".

When it made its first public appearance at Larkrail last year, its impact with visitors was absolutely huge, and that was when it was more or less a "small diorama".

In its fully grown state as appearing at this year's York show it is going to blow everyone's socks off - whatever scale they are!!

It is a totally inspired work of genius on so many levels, it will be worth going to the York show just to see this one layout alone.

Hi John, thanks for the response, which I find a little ingratiating. I regularly attend exhibitions as part of the James Street operating team, and am building my own SR based layout based on the area around Stewart’s Lane, so don’t need to attend other shows. We are in York in May with James Street, but having been to your show back in the 90’s with Lynford Junction I for one would love to have been invited back. It took a lot of persuasion by the then NGS PO to get Lynford on there, and I suspect James Street won’t be getting an invite any time soon, despite the fact we’d love to be there.

I do sort of stick by my description of York as a diaroma, as there is little to see operationally than trains running in and stopping. Having seen the track plan that’s all you can do I think. The work involved and the idea are stunning, but it’s just like looking at a picture, but in model form. That’s a personal opinion, but I’m someone who likes to see things happening, like shunting, marshalling of passenger and freight trains, etc., hence my interest in operating James Street.

No offence meant. If you have a layout contact the current Show Manager John Shaw, I am not aware of any anti-N gauge policy. Email = showmanager@yorkshow.org.uk

As the show weekend nears - don’t forget our family tickets are a bargain on the door or in advance - two adults plus two or more children for the price of 2A + 1C.

Counting down to the Show.

I know our traders, exhibitors and stewards are now getting ready for next weekend's fantastic show at the Knavesmire. After today you will still have six days to buy an Advance Ticket via Eventbrite as this option is open through to and including Good Friday. The advance weather forecast is good, the coast, dales and moors will be rammed so why not come to our show instead. A feast of modelling at York Racecourse.

A connecting bus link will be running from York Railway Station to and from the show on all three days.  For the Saturday service bus options, albeit they are limited,  see - https://yorkshow.org.uk/rail-or-bus/

Whilst there is no connection to the York Racecourse show there is an N gauge only exhibition at the Railway Museum in May.

i will be exhibiting with “James Street” at the NGS show in May, so am well aware of it. It’s a shame that the main York show has a reputation amongst the N community for not having much N - “too busy polishing their O gauge” was one memorable quote in a thread about it on another forum.

It was also good to see the builder of the 2mm York refer to it as “almost a diorama” in the Modeller this month. Made me feel a bit better!

Seems a rather biased view of the York team - I'm an N gauge modeller, never had any issues with the chosen layouts, it's the second time you've made this point in a rather spiked way.  I could argue that I am seeing too much of St James Street as it seems to be at every exhibition and it cannot be the only big N gauge model railway.

Rather than publicly have second a dig the organisers of a show, why not PM them directly as suggested and discuss bringing St James Street or other N gauge exhibition layouts you are involved with in a future year?

I didn’t see that you were with James Street until after I’d replied, I’ll see you at the NRM as I’m bring Kensington Olympia…..which also has an invite for York in 2024.
I work with John Shaw who has just taken on the show managers job…he’s definitely looking for layouts, drop him a line.

Looking forward to my first York show ever this year. there looks to be some really high quality layouts and indeed traders. Bit of a last minute decision but will be about £30 all in from Newcastle (+ everything I spend there which will probably be a lot more!)

To reply to woodenhead, my views on York are based on previous experience and feedback on forums, etc. It took a lot of work from the then NGS PO to get Lynford Junction there in the 90's, and then other comments have obviously coloured my views. I don't mean to be spiky, just commenting on what I see as a bit of bias against N at York compared to other shows. "James Street" (no St. by the way) has been to about six shows a year since 2017, just over 20 in all taking into account Covid, so hardly overexposed compared to some layouts. A lot of layouts seem to generate their own publicity, and knowing people "on the circuit" does seem to get you an in. I'll get Steve to write to the organisers......

Website updated - On site and measuring up. One late trader withdrawal (Powerbond Adhesives) and the SLS added to the Societies list as they have a selection of back Journals available.

Well, you are certainly coming across as spiky. And a “bias”?  Get over yourself for goodness sake. Despite being one seen as one of the “big” shows York is still run entirely by a small group of volunteers scattered across the country who have all on putting the show together, and certainly don’t have time or mental capacity to hold imagined biases against scales.

FWIW my introduction to the potential of N gauge was at the York show - from “Gransmoor Castle” and “Chiltern Green” to the micro Scottish termini produced by a local group, and both US and Continental N layouts as well.

(To clarify - I am not part of the York show team. However, I do know a couple of them personally from many many years ago.)

Wow that is a novel way of getting an invitation to an exhibition. 🤔

I am quite honoured that my layout Pig Lane has been invited to replace a layout that has had to be withdrawn. After you have spent next week's housekeeping money on new books from Booklaw please don't blink as you pass from Coleford to Leysdown or you will miss my small layout. 😉

With that sort of attitude, were I the exhibition manager, I'd be tempted to invite James Street and put it on the top floor...

More seriously though, James Street requires a substantial space. It's one of the first layouts anyone laying the floor out invites, not something to drop in because a few (one?) grumpy people consider your show to have an anti-bias against certain scales or gauges. In the racecoarse, the options for fitting it in are very limited. It won't go on the mezanines, or into many of the upper floors, which leaves the ground floor and that will fill up quickly and be booked years in advance.
