JSpencer
The debate seems to be price and colour of the loco. Of course those who don't like the colour will find the model very expensive! Those who do like the colour will uhmm and arr over the price before deciding to buy one. While those who love it probably won't think twice. This loco, no interest for me... But City of Wells in full Golden Arrow colours (an open goal that has been waiting almost 2 decades now!) would quickly get my hard earned...
RyanN91
I have managed to secure one i think it looks very nice. Although I'm surprised it is just a locomotive and not a special train set like the one which was produced for the Diamond jubilee. Mind you securing one at the moment is alot easier to do than trying to secure the limited edition platinum 70th anniversary jubilee tin of Cadbury Roses.

I don't think there is a special train though. It's not mainline registered so you are limited to what stock the SVR has and apart from the BR Mark Ones Hornby don't make many of them. https://www.svrwiki.com/Carriages Jason

Whereas the vision in purple is rebuilt. Hornby did one I think about 20 years ago.
Robin Brasher
I think Hornby has made a good decision to make a model of 'Elizabeth ll' in purple livery as it has sold well. I assume Hornby has reproduced the colour accurately. Purple is a colour people either love or hate and it does not appear very often in the natural World. You see it in heather and orchids and other plants. I like it as a colour and for a locomotive on its own. My main interest is the Swanage Railway and I would have bought Hornby's model if it had appeared there. Our model railway club has also got a model of part of the Severn Valley Railway but none of our members have bought a model of 'City of Wells' in purple yet.

I'd say this sums things up perfectly. This is a souvenier loco - if you've seen it and want a miniature version you'll buy it. Or maybe you just want something different then it can join Peco's purple bugbox on the shelf. Nothing wrong with that and it helps Hornby and the SVR. 1

Anyhow, they could've covered it with patriotic Jubilee wallpaper instead..... Its been done before! * The BR version didn't last long! Now that's a Limited Edition I might be tempted to buy 😀

City Of Wells was still in BR Green the last time I looked. Should be running this week. https://www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk/loco-roster/ Might try and get up to Bury in the next week or two. But yes I agree, whilst mine will be a bit of imagination location wise, I'd not be buying it if it was painted green.

An essential feature in any collection and not at all because it's a little less than accurate paint-wise. 11 hours ago, TomScrut said: Or a slight stretch of the imagination to say it did more than what it would do, i.e. visit other places in that livery. It's not got smoke, the X04 motor doesn't work and someone has switched the tender axles around so the sound doesn't work. I'm still chuffed with my buy, and will be fixing the sound and motor! Why anyone needs more noise then a cam on some sandpaper can generate is a mystery to me... 😀 3 1

If not, then its easy to swap out and fix at leisure while the replacement gives you fun! TBH the lack of smoke is a good thing and I always move the cam along the axle to get rid of the irritating chuff! (It means that any future owner can re-engage it without any problems...) Does the telephone number still work? :-)

Having seen the loco in that colour for myself, bright sunlight makes it look much lighter (and pinker) than it does in overcast conditions (or if you stand on the shady side of the loco). It doesn't need a photographer tweaking saturation to see the effect - in fact it does not need a camera at all as your own eyesight can see the difference when comparing the sunlit side with the shady side. The photo in the Ripon link was clearly taken in overcast conditions, unlike most of the 'bright pink' images we have seen that were taken in bright sunlight.

Is not the photo in the opening frames of the video one of the advance publicity photo-shops? It has the BR number etc. I've yet to see a photo of the repainted engine where the colour looks anything other than lilac.
Steamport Southport
I looked at it on the webcam, but couldn't get a proper shot. Judging by the colours of items we know the colour of, it is at the lighter end of the purple spectrum. This image tallies with most photos I've seen and hasn't been altered in anyway.
