Class 31, by Accurascale - It's time 2 Brush Up!

My first Accurascale model is 31409.

Just opened the box. Wow very impressive. Even the packaging is a cut above.

Well done Accurascale.

 

I have two Hornby ones, so the comparisons above are very interesting.

Did a bit of light weathering and some proper use today couple of pipes fell off so will try and locate as in front pic.  Hauls all my coaches, 21 no issues.

 

Interestingly I noticed when room in dusk lighting, the cab light was on!!!!!  fantastic, not easy to see under normal lights, something I really like.  Difficult to photo, so turned off all lights as in last 2 pics. FWIW for DC ready users, the bank of 8 switches are all on (7 I turned on for fan and 8 but that seems nowt to do with cab lights), bank of 6 as per instructions and as delivered.   A bonus, may be I'm just lucky

And it looks like they have cut outs for some of the pipe work.

Quite a few ploughs had bits cut out for pipes. That why a lot of ploughs had loco numbers and position painted on them.

Well I was going to re-number 402 but then I thought way make life easy! But the extra plate is has  gone.

Hi Farren,

 

From the picture you appear to have removed this plate:-

 

which covers the handhold/footstep that previously gave access to the boiler filler behind it, this should be  present on 31 402.

 

The cover that should not be on 402 is this one:-

 

 

so 402 should be like this:-

 

 

 

If I understand correctly this cover should only be present on locomotives that were uprated to 1600 bhp at one time, which 409 was and 402 was not.  So 409 should have the cover and 402 should not. Having spent the last hour poring over images of class 31s and in particular Rail Portfolio 15 - The 30s and 31s compiled by Peter J Robinson and published by Ian Allan in 1991 I have found photo's of 31 402 (page 61) and 31 409 (page 49) which confirm this.

Do you know what is incredible nowadays?

Just to see how far people like Accurascale have moved the standard on, that people are picking out details like which roof for which individual model!

I'm not knocking it / not doubting it, it's just incredible the detail we're all looking at and appreciating!

Absolutely, I hadn't even noticed that 402 had that extra panel until I read about it on here, every day's a schoolday!  I have both 402 and 409 and I don't intend to do anything to either other than to appreciate what incredible models they are.

My ‘402 stops immediately power is removed

 

Im also confused that the “usual” power pack control of AUX9 is also used for the rear cab

 

If your power pack IS working, what do you have in cv 16.0.339?? And is your rear cab still on F20?

Do you have at least 14V on the track?, as the ESU stay alive doesn't work below that voltage from what I've read hereabouts.

I've had to buy a 15v 2 amp power supply for my PowerCab to get the stay-alive to work. I did have a power supply which was supplying 14v, but once it goes through the PowerCab, it's usually about -0.5v less at the track.

Also, do you have it on the main rather than a programming track? I don’t know the what set up you have, but my ZTC system won’t power the stay-alive when the loco is on the programming output.

Right now, I have it on a SPROG II with a 12v supply. Time to switch to my Lenz setup which has 15v iirc and see what happens

Has anyone seen 14 volts out of a powercab on track? ive had Alpha meter on when ive played on rolling road running in stuff until the layout is further on and never seen more than 13.5,i just guess thats why aegis has 5 amp and variable track voltage capability as on its own its not up to supply what a stay alive model needs.

Well, as mentioned above, i've just bought a new 15v 2A power supply, and that now seems capable of powering up the stay-alive, unlike my old 14v 2.5A power supply. So, if the ESU stay-alive does require 14V, then I guess it can do so.

If you feel there are any other issues, feel free to make a similar post with pictures of your model.

And I can confirm with that my Lenz system (with about 16V on the track), the power pack does indeed work as advertised. About 7 seconds of sound (and fan) with the power removed

I absolutely love these 31s! The detail is insane. Definately right to sell "my other ones" 4 holes to drill for the ploughs and pipes, all went well. Least there wernt holes, where there shouldn't be holes on the non plough versions.

 

Having been introduced to the rail world at the age of 7 with these type 2s hauling Norwich- Birmingham New Street, these definitely scream 31!

As a 7 year old in 1988, standing as track level, that was one thing I remember about them. There are a few roller bearing manufacturers that done various axleboxes, yes Timken being one, also SKF.

Pretty well known that Ernst Gustav Hoffmann had balls of steel.  🙂

 

Do a google for  "Ransome and Marles Bearing Co".  RHP (Ransomes, Hoffmann & Pollard) had a rail served siding of the Tyne Dock to Consett line. They supplied much of the British Automotive industry with bearings along with the specialist tools to install them.

 

Somewhere, I still have a box of Hoffmanns steel balls...   for bicycles.

Once again I have proved myself totally incapable of having a loco with ETH cables fitted having managed to knock one off completely and break another on 31 432, so I’ll be onto the spares dept tomorrow.

 

Whilst it’s obvious where the can front end slots in, can anyone tell me how it attaches to the bottom / side panel f the body?
