'CHARD
Frankly the appearance of this version is not at all to my taste, being a bit of a straight-edge Death Steam kind of guy. It's impossible to tell through all that gaudiness how the poor thing would look caked in grot and as though it's at one with the Cumbrian landscape. 6
G-BOAF
Some decent shots on youtube by Class47Peter (not normally my kind of reviewer, far too liberal in his glue use imho). The lamp brackets actually look quite good once fitted with no bigger plug or hole than would be expected with a separate lamp iron being well fitted into the model. So that's encouraging. 1 1 2

Is the base model good enough for lots of people or not, and if not, can the hobbyist base make it better? I can't remember the last model I purchased that I didn't do something to, but, I did have to start from something We really need DCC Concepts to bring back the lamps that they once produced. I did speak to them late last year, and it was being considered. I hope this inclusion by Hornby does not put them off. Unfortunately I could not get the correct lamps, but at least a correct size. They still need to be dimmed with some amber tint on the A3 as below. Comparison of Hornby and DCC Concepts. 4

As I said a while ago, they'd look good on the Ellis Clarke Black 5! 3 3

At least we still have the option of their removal and the fitting of the lamp irons from the accessory pack. As currently my operations are confined to a tabletop in a room with somewhat restricted natural light,I welcome this little additional brightness. 1

I watched this last night. Can't say I am as optimistic as to the ease of removal or concealment of the 'repair'. Peter had to revisit his first attempt as light blead (presumably because the LED's are permanently lit on DC?) through the PVA he'd used. Second repair with black tack worked but as we know, black tack doesnt really allow for 'invisible' repairs. The rear tender lamp is he said a permanent fitting with no alternative lamp bracket provided. The actual 'traditional' part of the model looks very well done indeed but the lamps and the loco tender coupling will be the minimum I'd need to do. 3

Shouldn't be a problem to disconnect the LEDs for my purposes and I have a nice new, sharp pair of Xuron cutters and a tube of filler for the one on the tender. How much hassle is involved will decide the fate of any further orders for Hornby locos with this feature. My gut feeling is to ignore them on release and pick them up cheap after the initial purchaser has lost some of the bits... Sam's Trains doesn't review "loaners" that is the major difference between him and some other reviewers. He of late seems to be a bit picky with locos costing over £200, I can understand why, if it is your own money you are not likely to want to waste it. As to lamps there is a physical limitation as to readily available leds, Hornby don't use enough to get a manufacturer to make a special. 2 1

Thats rubbish! Come on Hornby even you can't be as thick as to think lamps were left on between locos and their trains.... If Hornby can go to the trouble of having a plug in lamp for the smokebox door then there is no reason whey the same cannot be done for the tender... 3
