Yeah ok everyone keeps saying that and how awful it’s become but they can’t keep away from the juggernaut of crass commercialism on here year after year ;)

Free cake if you manage a season of abstinence after saying such

You're on!

See you for Formula 1 2023...

I must say that I'm becoming very uninterested in this years F1 campaign.

It seems that I can't be part of the demographic that the owners of F1 are interested in attracting....

This is the first year for a long time where I've been somewhat curious about how it'll go, I'm interested to see how the new car designs work out in a race. That's more interest than I've had for many a year; I was quite keen on F1 in the 90s but for most of the last 20 years it's faded in to a passing curiosity (enough that I pop in to this thread from time to time but it's a long time since I've watched an entire race).

It's definitely been tarnished by last year's goings on though.

Last years Championship was definitely tarnished, and even if you were a Max Fan, and celebrated his win, deep down inside you would know that without RB/ Masi intervention he would never have caught Lewis, won the Race or the Championship.

On paper it will always show a MV Championship, that cant be denied, but in any report / Book or film it will always have to say it was manipulated, and therefore not fairly won, even though he did have a far better season overall.

Lewis will always be the peoples Champion, but maybe not to die hard Max / RB fans.

If an organisation can’t bring itself to admit there is a problem then there is no way that it can ever be fixed.

The FIA and IOC are prime examples but there are many more.

Still, as long as there are riches to be harvested why bother to sort things out.

And Liberty don't care, any publicity is good publicity in their book, and Netflix are probably loving every minute of it.

I suspect that Liberty care rather too much. What we will never be told is if, as well as the menacing team-managers bellowing in Masi's ear, he had a sinister Liberty person reminding him of the need for spectacle not rules.

And if the press furore about the last race continues to rubbish the FIA, Liberty's prized sport is also devalued, which matters a lot, especially as we are told they are trying to sell....

Not at all.

Perhaps I'm going off on a rant, but apart from the bits that disappoint most people, things like this always make me roll my eyes:

Quote

Senior figures within F1, however, believe the report’s findings will not be made public. Instead the FIA will present only the organisational changes expected to be announced later this week: that the structure of race direction will change, the way of officiating will change, there will be the employment of more people and technology to support decisions, and that they will be insulated from pressure being applied to them during a race.

This idea that "throw more technology at something and it'll magically get better" increasingly irritates me. Technological obsession appears to have become almost an article of faith - must make things high tech! And I'm not just talking about F1 here (a sport where developing technology has always been at the heart of it, although I'm increasingly of the opinion that it's time to move on from that, since we're already past the point where we know how to build cars too fast for a human being to handle anyway). It isn't the silver bullet to all problems, and frequently doesn't address the real problem. But it does mean people don't have to make decisions - turn brain off and let the computer do it all for them.

But this is more tech to ensure those FIA and stewards' decisions are made with more and better data. I like the fact that the FIA can now examine steering input to determine who drove into whom. I like the VSC, where that 10 second lead you had over the next car isn't wiped out behind a full SC. I like that when brake-testing goes on, the FIA can determine exactly where the pedal was touched. Far from avoiding decisions, all this contributes to better-informed decisions with which you, I and the meejah cannot argue. Result.

What does it really change though? Historically sport (in general) has frequently got along fine with the officials' judgment is final. Do we want more and more scrutinising the data for hours or days on end, frequently not knowing the result until quite some time after the chequered flag?

I admit that my opinion is biased by my ever-increasing dislike of technology integration in to everything, especially when it comes to monitoring and recording.
