Smallwonder
Does anyone know how arrivals and departures were dealt with at Millerhill Yard in the late 1980s? I have seen photos of Speedlink trains pulled into the Bilston Glen branch, but was this to allow them to reverse into the yard? There seem to have been sidings with loops to allow engine release next to the through loops; were these used when trains were not reversed in? No intention of modelling it, just interested as it was not an easy place to see what was going on.
Mark Saunders
What became the electrification dept was the arrivals and all trains from the south had to go in and run around before going north! The Waverly route to Carlisle went through the middle of the Yard and was the route was lost when the city bypass road was built, hence the need for the diversion and dive under for the new line.
Fat Controller
There are track diagrams for 1962 and 1986 in ' The Illustrated History ofBritish Marshalling Yards' by Dr Michael Rhodes, originally published by OPC.
luckymucklebackit
The rationalisation in 1986 removed the last bit of the old Waverley route through the yard and all traffic arrived and departed from one of the four loops that still exist today. Any Speedlink traffic using the Bilston Glen branch after 1986 would most likely have been wagons being shunted into the small C&W depot at the south end of the yard. By this date according to Rhodes book there were 12 Trunk Speedlink and 14 feeder trip freights from local yards. There were also a number of block freight trains that used the yard to exchage crews.
