RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted August 14, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 14, 2021 New design Hornby chassis mated with a Lima body, both of which were found separately on eBay. Additional details such as bogie steps and buffer beam details added using plasticard strips and Replica pipe details. Light weathering applied to the chassis and body. RMweb Premium dale159 Posted August 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 14, 2021 Nice work. May I ask what wheels it is on? The standard Hornby wheels are a bit underscale and I found on my old layout the 3rd rail lifted the bogie frame up off the running rail thus the loco ground to a halt. Ended up swapping for equivalent Hornby wheels for a 92 which also necessitated swapping the 73 motor casing for one designed for the 4VEP to accommodate the larger wheels. Dale I have swapped quite a few Lima bodies onto Hornby chassis over the years, but have left the wheels alone. However, the culprits for fouling the third rail are those moulded on sand pipes, which are way out of gauge anyway, as well as being rather thick. I cut all of them off flush with the lower edges of the bogie frames, on both the original Lima chassis and the newer Hornby ones. If I ever get really inspired, I will add wire sand pipes to them, but, to be honest, it hardly notices that they are missing. 2

An alternative is to use the Dapol Pack from DCC Supplies (who cover Dapol's spares), which is about £6. Whichever route, the final model is lifted enormously by the detailing, as your pictures show. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted October 10, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2021 Thanks John. I wasn’t aware of the availability of the Dapol detail pack but it’s quite good fun making the details out of spares box bits and soldered brass wire. When all is weathered up it passes muster to my eyes Cheers Darius
John Tomlinson
The Lima tooling I think looks excellent - to me anyway - and I've detailed up three of my six 73's so far, though the weathering is yet to come. As it happens, I also have a 73101, somewhat inspired by this snap I did in September 1991 at South Croydon of the loco on its inaugural run after repaint into Pullman colours; Just over thirty years ago now - gulp!! Cheers, John. Edited October 10, 2021 by John Tomlinson
