Hi guys,

just some thoughts on what the title says, I’m looking at a Montana Rail Link HO SD45 and pondering on the Genesis or Proto 2000 model with sound, there’s all of $10 price difference but like any input to my decision, I only have one Proto 2000 loco an SP GP in my sea of Genesis , pleased with that but don’t know how the 6 axles add up, thanks

They are both good models and somewhat comparable so either is a good choice - really the biggest difference would be that the Genesis is actually a SD45-2 which usually means the only visual difference is the little window on the long hood.

Generally the Proto 2k and Genesis should be equivalent, where the newer Genesis 2.0 is a bigger step up in terms of features and details and is more comparable to a ScaleTrains Rivet Counter or Rapido.

Not quite.  The SD45 is a very different looking machine to the SD45-2.

SD45 - 65' short frame, angled radiators blended from the dynamic brake fairings.  1260 built 1965 - 1971.

SD45-2 - 68' long frame, conventional long hood, widely spaced radiator fans.  136 built 1972-1974.

Confusingly, MRL referred to both as SD45-2s... and these days (the few that are left) what look like original SD45s are actually SD40-2s or -3s...  but that madness can wait for another time!

The ol' sight glass trick is one spotting difference useful for telling similar dash 2s and non dash 2s  apart- think GP38 vs GP38-2, or GP40 vs GP40-2...

Good to know, never really paid much attention to the SD45 family as they didn't happen in Canada.

Not as real SD45s (as far as I know), but CP had some SP and DRGW ones rebuilt as SD40M-2s, retaining the SD45 carbodies, in the 549x series. I remember seeing a couple of them and being confused by the slanted radiators before I found out what they really were.
