Could be commercial explosives. Here's a Truro to St Blaizey in 1981 with two gunpowder wagons alongside at Vanwide (VEV)

Interesting, I never knew that such things were still in use by this time.

Although nearing the end of their revenue lives in 1981 they were still in use: the last I saw were condemned at Hoo in June 1983. https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brgunpowder Even pre-nat vans were still around c1980 https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/gwrgunpowdercxv  https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lmsgunpowdercxv which included one in Truro in 1979 https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/lmsgunpowdercxv/e3aa752a5

Can anybody more knowledgeable than me identify what the two very low wagons behind the first group of vans are?

Taunton concrete works sleeper wagons perhaps? Decades ago I built a kit for one.

Cracking shot - and I knew it was one of John Vaughan's as soon as I laid eyes on it.

It’s in his book Diesels in the Duchy.

Video time, we don't see a lot of decent pre 1990 video, this one even has a Peak on Mk3s at Stockport on a service train (it came back the other way behind an 86 later in the video).

Also the last train of blue/grey & Executive MK3s with a non aircon MK2 at the front!

At 5:05 is someone throwing paper out the window of one of the coaches?

Looks like it. Presumably they'd run out of toilet rolls to chuck out.

There's a good feature about this incident in the latest BRM / Traction.

I feel like Dumbarton Road comes up semi regularly. But there is a lot to take in here. Not sure I'd want to be in that car approaching the junction from an untreated road.

From Ernie on Flickr, the 'Banger Blue' era. Even on the steam Sentinel trying to upstage the rodent on the main line.

CR 1981-02-28 Coatbridge 25244 passing R B Tennent Ltd Foundry.

Quite a catch, that. The old Tennent site is now a B&Q I think. I'm marrying an Airdrie lady so spent a lot of time tracing maps of Coatbridge/ Airdrie/ Motherwell/ Hamilton's industrial history. A lot of which is long forgotten/ built over but there are still hints when knowing where to look. I'm on the understanding her great grandfather was killed at Bairds of Gartsherrie in a shunting incident.

And again from Ernie, look to the left background for some BR containers on holiday abroad:

GMK018 CIE 1961-04-xx Dublin Heuston goods yard E405 L45

I've been going to Ireland over many years but never really considered it to be 'abroad'. Makes it sound quite exotic!

Heuston has changed quite a bit but it still has Phoenix Park in the background.

Thanks for sharing, I really like this one. Beyond the unusual subject matter, I think it's that really dramatic lighting that does it :)
