Following on from the successful documentary about the saving of the line in 1953 here are the further stories of the railway.

With everyone else getting excited about 4mm I’ve been wondering what to do with my small O gauge collection and that includes the Dapol 1401. Finally watching the film again decided it and I thought I’d do a small layout based on Titfield post the documentary film ;)

So post filming 1401 was repaired and Thunderbolt returned to the museum. Walter Valentine agreed to pay a fine to compensate British Railways for the ‘loss’ of 1462 and to spare Dan & Himself a custodial sentence.
1462 was then also repaired with a new bufferbeam and the boiler shifted back to its correct position and has subsequently joined the roster

Currently Squire Gordon and Mr Valentine are looking at moving the engine shed to the yard and reopening the line beyond Titfield to Crockstone as Walter has ideas for Crockstone Brewery he’s just bought as an ‘investment’.

So we won’t be needing this ;)

(Crockstone follows T.E.B. Clarke’s idea of Titsey/ Limpsfield becoming Titfield and comes from Crockham/Godstone)

I like it.

What are you going to be using for a coach? The Wisbech and Upwell coach was available as an etch from D&S models but I'm not sure if it available now.

Marc

Technically the W&U coach was wrecked and doesn’t appear in the records after the film although its rumoured a second one was seen so this may be no.7? Simon (Rue d’Etropal) does 3D prints. I understand some Stroudley coaches were also acquired from the Southern Engineers Dept but I haven’t found the livery details yet so more research required. Dan’s house continued in service as the new lounge car so that will probably require scratchbuilding along with it’s Loriot Y chassis.

Speaking of which he also does this, below, which Mr Valentine found while in holiday in Ireland and though would be ideal for the Crockstone Brewery shunter once the converter truck is regauged.

After many ideas I’ve finally settled on a plan that’s 6ft long for the station.
This will be Crockstone to the West of Titfield with the line extended through Titfield shed.
It started as many do with a doodle after I’d been reading a book on the IoW and liked the simple Bembridge plan.

I had the idea that I could have an industry off the turntable so Mr Valentine’s brewery will be operated by the loco pushing it across the table from the loop. The reasoning being that the brewery building blocks a direct headshunt.
Grid is 3” squares so roughly 6x2ft

Brewery can be added later on a separate 1ft board.

Later still I plan to add a 90° curve using the set track and another similar sized version of Titfield.

The plan uses standard points here but experiments today proved I can use the set track points trimmed slightly without buffer locking on all three locos so as I already have a couple I will probably go with them.

Also available in 12"/1ft scale at Amberley - I assume the parts are still there.

If you want another oddity, you could give 18100 a test run down the branch. It was at Mallingford / BTM at the same time as the Thunderbolt.

Yes one of at least two this side of the Irish Sea as there’s one, less the carrier wagon, in the NG museum at Tywyn too.

All highly entertaining!

Bembridge-style in 6ft is good going, and I like the way you’ve made the layout quite wide for its length, which I reckon will make it look spacious in a way that my ‘study plank’ refuses to do, despite being longer (2200x450).

Collecting stock makes me hungry for some reason . . . .

These having been retired from mainline use are now used for general freight on the T&M.

At the Heaton Lodge show I met up with a friend who had a few things to sell I was picking up and he gave me this baseboard that’s really well built.
So I’ve been doodling ideas to use it as a micro at home.
So I thought what about Crockstone wharf just off scene on the bigger layout?

The idea is they enter from the left end and there’s an old siding off the right too so there’ll be a sleeper chained to the track rather than a bufferstop. (You never know you might want to extend it later 😜)

Well it went a bit quiet but things have been collecting 😉

The turntable arrived so when warmer weather arrives I can start laying track and ballasting.

Tom Young’s sequel arrived to the film and bears a very similar idea for the continuing story to mine so that was good.
It lead to a second P&C Bedford arriving to be converted to a railbus

and the book has some teak Gresley coaches replacing Dan’s coach. In the book only the first one, a buffet, has arrived but as Hattons we’re selling off their Gresleys and no buffet was made I have acquired a Corridor Third that is obviously one of the later ones to arrive. Like the Buffet it’s been restored to original teak condition 😎 and will be having a ‘Valentine conversion’ (installing a bar) and be reclassified as a Bar Lounge Third, BLT.
