The sun always shines on TV ...

... and sometimes on Chuffnell Regis.

This picture shows me two things.  Firstly, the chap with the shovel still appears to be getting a good talking to.  Second, I need to be far less slapdash when I paint the tracks on Chuffnell Regis Mk II.

Don’t worry about CR 2…. CR 1 is excellent, keep up the good work.

Thanks Neal.  There are some aspects of CR Mk I that I'm happy with, but others that are not so good.  The shoddy trackwork is the worst thing, and it's gradually becoming more of an irritant when I just want to do some testing.  So, I think CR Mk II may well be on the cards - Phil @Harlequin has teased me that he's had a flash of inspiration, so I'm waiting with bated breath to see what that might entail.

A-ha! It shows me two things, too:

  1. Some excellent painting on the figures
  2. Some very precise detailing on the rusty bolts on the coaling stage

At least, that's my train of thought.

Thanks BL.  The painting is one of the bits that I enjoy more!

I'm with you 100% on the harsh eye of the camera Rob.  Unfortunately it isn't just the paint on the tracks though; it's also far from smooth and level (in fact, about as lumpy as a blind cobbler's thumb in places).  That gives some of my locos real problems, and winds me up no end, so I think at some point it will have to go...

Ah, now we hit a paradox - because I'd say that is true...

But is that only because we're rattling around in the eight percent of the internet that isn't porn?

If you think your track's bad, Graham, you should see mine.

Proper messy.

Those figures are stunning mind you. Top job.

For a bit of a change of pace, I made a start on the railwaymen's cottages this evening.  You might remember that these are actually based on the cottage that my grandparents used to live in, in Herefordshire.  Originally I was going to build them in 1:87 scale, but I changed my mind 🙂

Will have to see how they fit into this space once they're finished; I might play around with the orientation until I'm happy with it.  Or maybe they'll end up getting saved for CR Mk II...

Having the joint in the brick paper right in the middle of the front wall is not, surprisingly enough, a cock-up.  The join will get covered with a down-pipe, and this has allowed me to wrap the paper around the corner of the building that's closest to the normal viewing position, as I didn't want to have a seam there.

You know what they say about all work and no play, so I've been taking the odd break here and there to make some slow progress with the cottages.  All the basic brickwork is now done, but I still need to clad the chimneys and add brick lintels over all the windows.  The chimneys will get some corbelling (?) at the top as well, sometime!

This will be the last hipped roof, hopefully!  I'm sure there are mathematical ways of working out all the measurements, but they're beyond me, so I resorted to a lot of measuring, fitting, and adjusting (repeat ad nauseam).

A long way to go but I think the overall shape is about right, in comparison to the real thing.

In a very rare case of actually taking my own advice, I gave the bricks a spray of matt varnish once I'd finished the chimneys.  I'm not going to do an interior, but will add dividing walls so that you can't see right through the building!  The small extension you can see on this end of the semis should be repeated at the other end, but I've left it off so that I can get the building nice and close to the backscene, if needed.  The space available for it on the layout is a shade tight...

Here's the actual building.  I'm working from some photos that my sister took for me, but don't have any actual measurements, so everything has been guesstimated by counting bricks!

That is really sharp work, and the brick paper is superb. You're not thinking of scrapping the layout yet I hope? You are pretty close to a reasonable scenic completion so why not get it there and take some time to appreciate it and play with the layout for a while? It will give you a better idea of what you want mk2 to look like.

That's very sound advice, thanks.  I am pleased with Chuffnell R overall, just a bit disappointed by my poor trackwork.  The cottages are the last major building before I tackle the station itself, so will be good practice for that!  So yes, I think I will press on with this one, and see what @Harlequin comes up with as a cunning plan for Mk II.  Realistically, I probably won't start building that one for quite a long time anyway.  Not enough time or money!

I think stay-alives might be the solution to my cr@ppy track for the time being.  The one I put into 2732 doesn't seem to have much "oomph", whilst the Kungfu one in my Bachmann pannier will run for several seconds without track power.  I've just ordered a couple more of those from Digitrains, and will pop one into 2732 in due course.

Thanks for the kind words about the cottages by the way - the brick paper is "Aged red brick" from Scalescenes.

Nice work on the cottages Graham, you've really captured the feel of the real thing. If I may make one small suggestion - and I appreciate how long you've taken getting the roof to fit - but I think your end "hips" are too slanted, they should be more vertical, that is, the peak of them should be nearer the ends of the building. However, that may be just a trick of the photo angle, so feel free to ignore me.

I think you're probably right Al.  I tried getting them at a steeper angle, but then the chimney fouled the joint between the two planes of the roof.  So I obviously got my estimations wrong somewhere.

Unfortunately little sis didn't get any square on photos, so that made figuring out the angles a bit tricky.  All in all, I think I'll leave it as it is; it would require a lot of surgery to change it now!

Yep absolutely, it looks good as it is.
