RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted February 8, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 8, 2021 (edited) Intrigued by the discussions elsewhere on RMWeb about this wagon I picked up by a few of these kits - specifically the Cambrian C46 kit. The parts need very little clean up and go together reasonably well. The guidance on building this kit on “World of Railways” is highly recommended. I still need to add the chain boxes, bolsters and other details. Cheers Darius Edited February 26, 2023 by Darius43
'CHARD
Well done for being able to obtain some of these, they're apparently like gold-dust at present!
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted February 8, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 8, 2021 Very nice. I couldn't see the reason for all the fuss, the Cambrian kit builds up easily and is considerably cheaper. Good luck with your endeavours. Mike. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted February 9, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 9, 2021 (edited) Weight added around the bogie pivots using “Liquid Lead”, carefully washing my hands afterwards of course. 37501
Built one of these a few years ago and added the rail cranes which I think were from a Genesis kit. Lots of small offcuts of mild steel and aluminium glued on underneath to add weight and strength. 10
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted February 10, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2021 (edited) One finished. Five more to go. I replaced the kit plastic bolster stanchions with examples cut from an old etched brass fret, which should be less prone to breakage. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted February 11, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 11, 2021 (edited) Added some 60ft track panels. I used some spare flexitrack, cut the webbing from the sleepers and spaced out the sleepers. The securing chains are from Cambrian. gridwatcher
Has anyone found a new source for the Rail Cranes since Genesis packed up or tried 3D printing them? I am sure they would sell?

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted February 18, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2021 (edited) Handrails cut from the provided metal wire. 14 No. required per side. What could be a real pain of a task made easy using the Bill Bedford handrail bending jig - one of the best modelling tools that I have ever bought. I was going to warn you that that is the most tedious part of the Sturgeon A kits. They are easy enough to build, but drilling out the handrail holes and bending them all is (as I said) tedious. Like you, I used a bending jig for mine. It is worth it in the end, though.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted February 18, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2021 Very nice work on your Sturgeon A, SRman. Mr Cambrian had already drilled the holes so all that was required was to bend and cut the handrails. Cheers Darius 1
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted February 18, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 18, 2021 Whilst it is an excellent tool, and I have both of them, Bill's jig has holes which are too large for handrail wire, so for smaller rails I find one of my artillery of needle nosed pliers which has the correct width on it and use that.
