At this stage, while we might be confident Merc-powered cars will have a good engine again, the changes to permitted aero features means neither Binotto nor anyone else knows what the pecking order will be. Looks like that was Ickx and Amon. Ferrari had despaired of Italian drivers, having lost Bandini at Monaco in 1967 - I recall watching that on tv - and then Scarfiotti died in a hill-climb earlier in '68. The fact that both Ickx and Amon survived their F1 careers says they were lucky in that era!
