Rapido staff Popular Post rapidoandy Posted December 1, 2020 Rapido staff Popular Post Share Posted December 1, 2020 Rapido Trains is pleased to announce that we're filling a big gap in the ranks of ‘OO’ gauge GWR models with the Hawksworth ‘15XX’ pannier tank. Although designed during the days of the Great Western Railway, the ‘15XXs’ were built by British Railways. They were a major departure from the GWR’s tried and tested pannier tank formula. The ‘15XX’ featured a very short wheelbase for negotiating tight curves and, with outside cylinders and Walschaerts valve gear, the bottom end design was said to have been inspired by the USATC 'S100' 0-6-0T (Southern Railway ‘USA’). Above the non-existent running plates, the locomotives resembled Hawksworth's '94XX' 0-6-0PT, which shared the same design of boiler. Prototype Factfile Built: Ten built in 1949 at Swindon Works to a design by FW Hawksworth How long did they last? The first was withdrawn in 1959 and the last had gone by the end of 1963. Three were used by the National Coal Board until 1969. Where did they work? The majority were based at Old Oak Common shed for moving coaches to and from Paddington station. However, other examples could be found as far afield as South Wales. Although designed for shunting they did, very occasionally, work short-haul passenger and goods trains. Can I see one? No. 1501 was bought from NCB by the embryonic Severn Valley Railway. It returned to steam in 1997 and has proven to be a popular and powerful member of the fleet, so much so that's earned the nickname ‘Raging Bull’. Specification Die-cast metal construction High quality motor and mechanism Next18 decoder socket DCC Sound options High level of detail NEM coupler pockets Sprung buffers What liveries are we making? 904001: No. 1506, BR unlined black, no emblem 904002: No. 1500, BR unlined black, early emblem 904003: No. 1505, BR lined black, early emblem 904004: No. 1504, BR unlined black, late emblem 904005: No. 1501, BR lined black early emblem (as preserved) 904006: No. 1509, NCB maroon Price? Prices for DCC Ready models are £129.95 each and DCC Sound models is £229.95 each. What stage is it at? The project is in the early stages. Design work has started using works drawings and a wealth of historical and preservation era photographs. When’s it due? Delivery is expected in 2022.

RMweb Gold wombatofludham Posted December 1, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 1, 2020 Although I have no need for one of these that price is really good for that specification. Let's hope Rapido continue in the same vein. 1
5050
I'm tempted, sorely tempted, really tempted etc. etc...................................... How will it be for conversion to P4 and EM? Plenty of room between the valve gear and crossheads for instance? 1/8" axles? Drop out wheelsets?

When you think of it thats cheaper than a K's kit goes for, when you add in the cost of decent wheels and motor,by a long way
Ribird
I know this may be controversial, but would a fictitious 'British Railways' in GWR green be a feasible addition to line up? I know none of the class ever wore this, neither has 1501. I would prefer a 'GWR' version, but then a new moulding would be needed for the lack of a BR smokebox plate on the door. These will be a great addition to GWR/WR rtr line up and I hope everything goes well with your UK launch! 1

Gibson wheels about £6 per axle. Plus motor of choice. Guess how I know.... Maybe ask Branchline/SE Finecast if they'll sell the chassis separately for those not wanting a coreless motor or gears, but wanting to keep the Rapido body. RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted December 1, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 1, 2020 I really don't need one of these, so there's nothing in this announcement for me. On the other hand, I do now want one, so there is definitely something in this announcement for me. A hulking big brute of a pannier it may be, there will be a place for one in the Kernow Towers First Class Pannier Lounge. 7 2 7

The Kernow Towers First Class Pannier Lounge is an exclusive place, Robin, but I think that I might just put this bruiser on the door, to keep undesirable LNER types out. 2 1

But I'll possibly get one of these. The lined black version is tempting. It was just that I noticed in the other Hunslet thread the "coreless" and "EM/P4" questions were already being asked. An etched chassis is an alternative if people really want to keep the body. People have been replacing RTR chassis for years. Even the brand new Dapol Mogul is getting one. As is the Hornby Prairie. http://www.brassmasters.co.uk/blog.htm#20-11-17 Jason 2

RMweb Gold BMacdermott Posted December 1, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 1, 2020 Hello everyone Congratulations to Rapido on this welcome announcement! The loco has been in The Top 50 of The 00 Wishlist Poll since 2015. In 2019 (the last poll), it finished up well within The Top 10 and was the second most wanted GWR loco (behind the Manor). We wish the company every success with the project! And every success to Richard Foster in his new post.
