KeithMacdonald
In short, what was it? I stumbled on this while browsing the excellent Peter Gray photo collection on Transport Treasury https://www.transporttreasury.com/f449715166 This looks like Ilfracombe https://www.transporttreasury.com/p25349941/ha9a1f6c3#ha9a1ecc7 Where's this? https://www.transporttreasury.com/p25349941/ha9a1f6c3#ha9a1ed6a Or this? https://www.transporttreasury.com/p25349941/ha9a1f6c3#ha9a1ed72 One image in particular has a great mix. Warship, DMU, two Hymeks, and a Class 8? shunter. https://www.transporttreasury.com/p25349941/ha9a1f6c3#ha9a1eda5 It also gets a mention here "The Exmoor Ranger approaching Torrington, 1965" http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/devon/hi/people_and_places/history/newsid_8364000/8364338.stm

The geography is correct with the bank on the left, and the buildings appear to match, but the only decent photos I can find are of the other end of the station, mostly taken from the Sticklepath road bridge. Rivercider
Yes I would suggest (or strongly recommend ) Ilfracombe. Barnstaple (Junction), Dulverton, and Taunton, cheers Edited November 8, 2020 by Rivercider
KeithMacdonald
So, was the Exmoor Ranger a special for enthusiasts that ran more than once, or to various destinations? It was a special working, although it may perhaps have run over more than one weekend? There are many photos of the working posted online, which give a false indication of the rail system that year, cheers
KeithMacdonald
After a bit more searching I've found one with a useful caption! Quote The joint Plymouth Railway Circle and RCTS 'Exmoor Ranger' five coach rail tour visited a number of lines that were due to lose their passenger service on March 27th 1965, including the Halwill to Petrockstow section which had been closed to all traffic four weeks prior to this tour. Ivatt '2MT's Nos. 41206 and 41291 are heading the train at Barnstaple. On shed is Collett '2251' No. 3205, allocated to Exmouth Junction, which will bank the train from Braunton to Morthoe, before taking over for the return from Ilfracombe to Barnstaple and on to Exeter via Dulverton and Taunton. It would be withdrawn shortly afterwards, but was saved for preservation, the only one of its class to survive. https://www.rail-online.co.uk/p1005521121/h67E2CCE0#h67e2cce0 BRDatabase says both 41206 and 41291 were based at Exmouth Junction, until June 1965, when they were moved to Templecombe (S&D).
pb_devon
Six Bells Junction has the tour details https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk plus the Cornwall Railway Society has extensive images of the lines on its website http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/barnstaple-to-torrington-and-halwill-jct-ecl.html
KeithMacdonald
@pb_devon Thanks for that link to Six Bells Junction. Which certainly has great content, and clearly wins prizes for substance over style. After a bit of rummaging through the "heritage-style" navigation, I found what you meant. https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/60s/650327er.html Quote 27th March 1965 Plymouth Railway Circle / R.C.T.S.
