Popular Post apbolton
It's been some time since I last posted any progress and to be honest I have done very little on the layout, I have however been working on the platforms in the warmth, now its a bit warmer I have started to complete them insitu. Before I get too far along I want to complete the backscene, so I have put a first coat of plaster on the rock face and a bit of blue for the sky. Lots to do yet duties its a start, hoping for a building day in May, so watch this space!

apbolton
Work seems to have got in the way at the moment, but it will be arranged, not been idle though, watch this space! 1
apbolton
Although not part of the original plan, we decided that there was room for a small quarry behind Chee Tor, that baseboard was added last year and the track set out, but then left. I decided it was time to get on with it, so over the last week for an hour or so each night I have pinned down the track and wired it up. Now all I need to do is build a small control panel and it will be fully operational and ready for some scenic work.

apbolton
Yes it is, independently operated from the main layout but also an excuse to have some ICI bogie hoppers which in reality would not be seen at Millers Dale, bit of modellers licence, after all the Peak District is noted for its quarries, isn't it.
LMS29
Sounds like a chance to have a small shunting layout within the larger set up. Do you have a track plan of the whole layout that you could show again, please. Tom
apbolton
Here is the original drawing Graham produced for me, the additional quarry is in the bottom right above the track shown making the layout on 3 different levels. And you know how much I like shunting but it was really an excuse to have some of the ICI bogie hoppers or at least a reason to run them through Millers Dale and Monsal Head.
apbolton
Progress has been a bit slow this last couple of weeks, but I've managed to add the entrance to the quarry besides Chee Tor tunnel, although not prototypical and somewhat lower than planned the hillside has been extended. It was my intention to make it slope more on the righthand side but there wasn't enough clearance for the up and over door.
TT100 Diesels
Fantastic stuff, Peak District in model form, what's not to like! Loving the limestone cuttings, tunnels and engineering features. Very very impressive modelling. 1
LNER4479
Well, to my eternal shame, it turns out that it's been almost exactly a year since I was last here. Paul had tidied up in my honour! My mission for the day - and I chose to accept it - was: Fill in this piece of scenery on the lift out section. Plenty of 'make it up as you go along' carpentry ensued. Now with added chicken wire. This gives an idea of how it is intended to be a continuation of the existing scenery in the Chee Dale area. We decided on it being lift out, just in case. By now, it's likely to have been mod-roc'd (other types of plaster-impregnated bandage are available). Meanwhile, whilst I was there ... 8
LNER4479
We set up some trains for photography at Miller's Dale. Paul's been working on his specialist subject - buildings. Definitely starting to look the part. The 9F sets off towards the next challenge - how to disguise / cover the 180 deg curve beyond here. Much cogitating took place. Stayed tuned for next visit, hopefully in rather less than a year's time (!) 17
apbolton
You're not wrong there Graham, First stage completed, 3 layers of plaster bandage applied. As soon as I have the time it will be skimmed with polyfiller coloured with brown paint, before the flock is applied. 5

apbolton
Stage 2 complete, plastered and grassed, it needs hovering off once it dried, more will be done to it in time but it will not be properly finished for a while. 9
LNER4479
A bit of an amalgam following latest visit today - forgot to take any pix last time(!) Ivatt 4MT rolls down the grade through Millers Dale with a parcels train. So, what's new, you may ask? Well, the previous visit(s) pictured more or less completed the scenery structure work in the Chee Dale area, so attention has now turned to the Millers Dale scene, across the famous viaducts and beyond. This pic might explain better? Behind the farthest viaduct has to be a backscene, with parts removable to get at the hidden tracks below for maintenance / cleaning ... and the odd disaster recovery(!). The piece of unpainted hardboard is permanent fixed, as is the tunnel mouth former beyond, but the piece of backscene between IS removable. As is this rather oddly shaped piece! It covers the access gap bottom left in the previous picture. The whole backscene geometry becomes a bit of a nonsense at this point - in reality, there's a gaping river canyon beyond the bridge(!) so this structure needs a skim of plaster then painting blue to match the sky colour. Hopefully it'll blend in a little bit more than this pic might suggest. Paul, meanwhile, was uncharacteristically wielding a soldrin' iron ... apbolton
Yes indeed, the 11 fiddle yard tracks now have isolating sections and I only burnt my fingers once! Next all the points need connecting to the control panel and then I will be able to run trains properly. 8
Popular Post apbolton
Update, thanks to animotion of this parish, who sent me some wonderful photos, I have made a start on the last station building, platforms 2 and 3. Firstly platform 3 side was cut out and the stone work added. Then the remaining walls were added and the window overlays were built up. And now the upstairs is being added. And finally a test fit on the layout before I get any further. Edited February 19 by apbolton Grammar 11
RMweb Gold BoD Posted February 19 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19 That looks fantastic, Paul. Is it the product of the silhouette cutter?
apbolton
Hi BoD The window overlays and the gable ends are cut using the silhouette cutter , it makes it very easy to duplicate parts.
LNER4479
Just returned home from the latest visit. Rather horrified to realise that previous one was as long ago as November last year 🫣 Anyhow, we had another mountain to build(!) This is the far end of the layout, where a tight 180 links the Millers Dale and Monsal Head scenes. Fortunately, tunnels abound! And where there's tunnels, there's mountains! By lunchtime, we had front, middle and rear formers in place. With all important space inside the mountain(!) to get at any errant stock. The distant Brit gives a sense of scale. And by knocking off time, the rear part of the structure was more or less complete, ready for chicken wire. Note the building base (with temporary building just plonked in place for effect). This will be the Monsal Head Hotel pub - can't miss that out. It might be modelled in smaller scale to emphasise the grandeur of the scenery. This was the continual 'sense check' throughout the day. From the river bank below the viaduct, photos show that the roof of the pub is just visible on the skyline. Hopefully we got that reasonably convincing. Next time, we hope to complete the scenery structure around the Monsal Head tunnel mouth. There's a date in the diary which should ensure not such a long gap this time round ...
