Just searched Railway themed Chess Set.

The good old USA have beat you too it!

On a certain auction site, there is a Santa Fe set listed as the battle of Steam over Diesels!

Then again, how about a MR versus GWR set?

Off for lunch

Paul

Then the argument would be who goes first, red or green.

Depending on era, size of engine 😄, weight of train, it might benefit red to move first, for a short while....

One of the more bizzare thoughts that flashed through my head this morning was railway chess pieces.

Instead of the standard chess pieces, how about railway orientated replacements.

Kings and Castles are obvious starters, and pawns could be Jinties of Panniers depending on your fancy.

What about four chess sets, one each for the 'big four'. Choose your favourite company or play chaturanga*.

*The original game that became chess, played with four players.

This morning has been spent shortening a fence post and a trellis panel, then taking Nyda for a hospital appointment.

Note to DH:  The Apley 'car park' behind the hospital heli pad  was rammed this morning as was the nature reserve car park, so you can't rely on them any more for a short stay car park. Someone has obviously blabbed to the wrong people about our secret parking place.

A distinct advantage if fielding a Stanier Coronation pacific.

It wasn’t me Guv, honest. Thanks for the heads up, though.

Which can't move until the lesser fleet has made a route available.

Different pieces for each side, of course. Jinties v Panniers. Or does that just sound too much like a third-rate Hollywood fantasy action movie?

How a Deltic for the rook.  Several were named after nags.

I nominate the NBL warships as pawns, one square at a time is pushing it for them and they're disposable.

...snip... I recommend Korean buldak noodles for those who like spicy food, or Singaporean Prima laksa or curry noodles which are excellent and pretty close to restaurant quality laksa or curry broth.

Now, there is a term with multiple meanings!

The way of life has changed considerably in the last 50 years.

Consider the simple irritating mantra, ‘Work, Eat, Sleep, Repeat!

Over the years a combination of Food Producers and Distributors have created products that I meant to make life easier.

The result is that the amount of time in preparation is drastically reduced.    Consequently, you end up with more people either, working longer hours or commuting further for better pay, or lounging around staring at the TV, or Smart Device, whether they are employed or not!
The general population gets lazy and then resorts to Take Away’s instead of attempting to cook.

Does Officialdom care?  Publicly, Yes!

Off the record, probably not.  Think of the ultimate savings to the State, in not having to provide pensions.

Paul

Another factor could be how both homemakers have to be employed to be able to afford all the benefits that are now regarded as "essentials". That has changed a lot from 50+ years ago.

If you did an engineering version the pieces could be as follows.

King:           Male splined pin

Queen:       Female splined shaft

Bishop:      Split pin

Knight:       Allen Key

Castle:       Castellated Nut

Pawns:      Short lengths of tubing
