Do pinpoint axles reduce friction?

It depends........

Whilst all pinpoint axles are equal, some are more equal than others.

I have yet to determine the exact issue as the UK stock has been sidelined as there's a different (non-UK) layout priority in the next  few weeks.

In case you didn't already guess, it was a trick question 😆

The weight on the axles is the same and, assuming same materials and lubrication as non-pinpointed axles, the laws of friction tell us the friction is exactly the same. But pinpoint axles clearly work, so how can the friction be the same?

The friction is the same but it acts at a smaller radius which means it produces less torque on the axle to oppose rotation.

Could be a lot of factors. Different material compositions can make a big difference. The surface quality of the points. A little eccentricity. Not really "pinpoint" and more like tapered axles in tapered bearings.

The best ones I ever found were the old Peco Wonderful Wagons with nylon axles running in Delrin bearings. I have some Airfix wagons with Delrin bearings and Peco wheels and they are very good too.

But they usually are different material combinations and surface finishes, so you cannot make a true comparison.  I'd just swap the wheels and move onto the next problem, personally...... otherwise I'll turn into someone who, finding nothing to watch on any channel, will try to solve this by dismantling the remote.

I can make any comparison I like 🤣

I think it's a combination of the axle and the bogie material - but won't know for a month or two until I can dig further.

Delrin is good for bearing surfaces, but like Nylon IIRC, doesn't take paint too easily. Hence the move by model manufacturers to move to other materials as painted underframes became more common.

I first came across the issue (sluggish pinpoints) in the late 1990s with a set of Bachmann vans were starting to drag after 2-3 exhbitions and there was a white powdery residue in the pinpoint. Traced to Bachy using an ABS based plastic for the underframes

Just don't get caught speeding. I can see it know - a hippo has been caught speeding in a Seat whilst fondling a toy train. Pc Evans says he was suspicious as the driver didn't use his indicators and didn't stop at junctions. Sentencing has been adjourned whilst reports on the hippos mental state are considered.

Mitigating circumstances such as being able to operate the indicators with a finger is also being considered

I think they asked for reports as they were a bit concerned about him having a toy train. So far they haven't asked about what he was doing with it. I dread to think what the answer will be.

I'm in the fortunate position of having a name known to all the Roads Policing Officers in South Wales, and they know that  Justice is on my side, thus I am left well alone. I'm sure that Sheepbloke and br2975 can attest to this.

When Bear gets a difficult question I just go upstairs; by the time I get to the top I've forgotten what the question was.  Works for me.

Well I suppose it helps them recognise you as you have that big hand with the extended finger pointing down on top of the car as well.

And the sign that says Caution extra wide load.

Whilst you're at it, don't forget the four escort vehicles and the twelve motorcycle outriders.

It's sunny today, so I think I will be able to lay the ply to reinforce the floor of one of my Special Hippo Engineering Depots.

There again, possibly not, and I will just emulate a sloth.

When I did something similar to my shed - yes I know that's a bit of a revelation but and it's a big but I did have a life before I found TNM or should that be salvation. So where was I ah yes reinforcing the shed floor, I put down some insulation. Not much but it helped keep things drier. I left the plywood unsecured so that it could be lifted if I so choose.
