Or just replacing the turbochargers.

Not sure they even had turbos. Looks like they were two-stroke diesels with opposed pistons and no cylinder heads.

I had a grandfather who was an engineer in a shipyard and I can remember him saying how really nasty the early diesels used in ships and subs were and how much they injured the crews.

Greetings from somewhere near Hanover.

Our assault on the border met with minimal resistance.

No queue and three bored looking policemen. The advice of the Polish border guard that it was all flowing freely was still correct 2 hours after we called them.

We then crossed the Elbe and made contact with Storm Henik.

It was a tad wet out there.

Just awoken from a slumber at a service station  and continued battle with the storm is on the cards, luckily we have 3 hours in hand on the schedule.

That post card may be in the post soon.

2am

Buckataul services.

We sneeked past the trucks standing guard ( seemingly every truck in Germany, ) to find the petrol station, but more importantly an iced Americano bun.

It's become a tradition with the SM42s to stop there for an coffee and an iced bun and I wasn't going to let the early hour stop me observing it.

Meanwhile at Lippestadt services they charge 80c to use the toilet but give you a €1 voucher to use in the shop / cafe.

We've actually been paid to spend a penny.

But what can you get in the cafe cake dept for 20c so you break even?

I'll wager you spent rather more than that.

Have they got contactless turnstiles now to enter the loo or do you still need coins?

We got charged 80c each in Belgium. Contactless was available as well as coins and they gave change.

€4.50,  less the two €1 vouchers.

It's all very cunning

Pay to use the loo and either leave the money behind or give in to the urge to use the voucher.

At least you don't have to pay for the loo in addition to what you buy

We are currently awaiting our channel crossing.

If you're going by boat, lets hope that the water isn't too lumpy...

We were delayed by high winds once using the Channel tunnel. We had to wait for a couple of hours in the queue  after security.    At least there were loos available.

Not just the Germans, Yorkshireman as well. Before Morrisons was taken over and we're still owned by the Morrisons family you had to pay to park at there supermarkets. So long as you shopped at the supermarket you could claim the cost back. Did I say it was a Yorkshireman.

A firm that nearly never got going.  William Morrison ran a market stall in Bradford and his two sons, one of whom became Sir Kenneth, were narrowly missed by a falling steam loco at Adolphus Street in Bradford.the loco came through the station wall and  fell about 30 '  into the street narrowly missing the two brothers wheeling their cartback from the wholesale market.  They were unscathed

But the loco was cut up on the spot.

The two big Morrisons stores round here were former Safeway supermarkets. Safeway hadn’t charged for parking and neither did Morrisons. Perhaps they were worried about Essex folk re running the Battle of Benfleet when visitors from York had their boats burned and had to walk home.

EMDs will smoke as well, given appropriate conditions:

wait for the mid-train helpers at about 1:50.

The comment below is interesting, saying that it is noticeable that the locomotives stop smoking when they leave the tunnel implying that the smoke is due to incomplete combustion of the fuel. Does seem a logical explanation.

We are back home and mostly unpacked

After leaving the tunnel, didn't turn the wipers off till we got onto the M42.

I've seen less water in a car wash.

The only thing needed was a 3rd speed on the wipers.

Beer and sandwiches at SM42 Towers are now order of the day

Clearly then a case of Yorkist discrimination against good, honest Lancastrians. To hold a grudge for that long obviously sore losers.

It does take some getting used to, even for those who haven't been abroad.

We did catch up with a police car hogging the middle lane on the M40.

The reason became apparent when they pulled into lane 3 behind a Fiat 500 that had been  bumbling along in the outside lane.

A quick flash of blue lights sorted them out.

He then dropped in behind me but I was a good boy and just about stayed on 70mph, maybe touched 72 briefly and left them behind.

I do like it when  a 4 lane motorway is reduced to 2 lanes by MLOC.

No really, I think it's great. 😠

I'm surprised you came across a cop car. Rarer than hens teeth. Must have been going back for something to eat or a loo break.
