With all due respect I can assure you your "professional" is blowing smoke up your kilt 😀 The purpose of the studs/bolts is to connect the wheel semi-permanently with the hub by the friction created by the studs/bolts in tension. If you don't believe me, ask why the nuts/bolts have a taper where they interface with the wheel rim. Wouldn't a lock-washer be more than sufficient? I think you misunderstood the use of hang. You hang the wheel on the studs ( hold in place with a toe or knee) before applying the nuts to secure it in place. Andy 4

Andy The thing that transmits torque to the tire is the friction between between the wheel rim and the hub. That's why it's crucial that the studs/bolts are correctly torqued. 3 2
RMweb Gold Popular Post Happy Hippo Posted November 28, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 28, 2022 (edited) A bit of a shock came my way earlier on this morning. The lady, who is our Church PCC Secretary, was killed in an RTC yesterday afternoon on her way to a service in one of the parishes other churches. Ironically, it was close to the scene of the last fatal RTC I had any involvement with. Since the seniority is based on years in the rank a promotion zone becomes similar to a temperature gauge which is coded yellow, green and red. Yellow is not yet, green is the go zone and red speaks for itself. So an officer who sees he is either approaching the red zone or who has just passed into it, commits an error that reduces his seniority in the rank, and neatly slides pack into the promotion zone! A Commander who was probably for the scrap heap and had been passed over for promotion, suddenly found himself back in the running and eventually promoted after he managed to run his Frigate aground. Dave can better comment on the RAF, but for aircrew, there are two routes. The specialist aircrew who have a promotion ceiling of Sqn Ldr, but spend their career as aviators. The others spend half their career commanding a desk. The Army is far more blunt. Any officer who cannot pass the Captain to Major examination is compulsory retired. (It is rumoured that the Ginger Whinger jumped before being pushed: Ditto his Aunt's first husband.) At higher levels, a Lt Col who is passed over can either leave or be placed on the special list. although he retains his Lt Col pension rights on retirement, his service pay for the last few years of service, pay is reduced accordingly and he fulfils roles at the SO2 (Major) level. The Army were also good at employing retired officers in Headquarters appointments and they were graded RO3-RO1. Of course this reduced the number of staff appointments for serving officers and saved that MoD quite a bit of money as they did not need as many regular officers to fill those appointments. Of course lack of staff appointments also meant that it thinned down the number of officers eligible for promotion, as they did not have the requisite staff experience! However, it does not matter how good you are, any physical injury that permanently downgrades your fitness status, immediately terminates you on the promotion ladder in your substantive rank ISTR that if a First Officer on submarines fails the Captain's Course then they are immediately taken off submarines as it may cause concern amongst the crew that they "weren't up to the job". 2

Or do you get really adventurous and do every room in a different shade of Magnolia......🤣
AndyID
Some Winters here are quite mild with snow only showing up in January and February. This tends to lull people (particularly those from California) into a false sense of security and they buy property here. Officially it's not even Winter and we've already had some serious snowfall. Snow started again yesterday evening and it is still snowing now. There is not a cat's chance of it melting any time soon as it will be extremely cold this week. Picking up Lorna at the airport tomorrow could be a bit challenging. 3

On a few walls last time we painted I used a heavy duty version that doesn’t seem to exist now or has been renamed. The doors and radiators are painted Farrow and Ball eggshell House White. That seems to have become School House White now. I hope it isn’t too different. 4 1

AndyID
Recently I've noticed just how much my specs enhance the Autumn colors. They are self-tinting and presumably react to UV because they do not darken in the car at all. Foliage on trees that looks a sort of dull green takes on a beautiful deep reddish orange with my specs and blue sky reminds me of Agfacolor prints from the sixties 😀 8

Obviously the former is a textured paint, whilst the latter is a grey. Magnolia Fresh Flour is in the Dulux expensive Heritage range. Fortunately our local indie paint shop could mix it using Dulux's trade range as a base for half the price. Andy

This should prompt him to get on with the video he promised. However - regarding said standards - there is a video clip on youtube with a loco not stopping before buffering up and hitting it rather hard. As this move was carried out by a retired train driver, he has an excuse..... Good to have a chinwag with HH and SM yesterday. For those that don't know, I was humbled to accept the Modern Image Layout award on behalf of my team. The new lenses do work in the car. It was something the optician knew about when I mentioned the previous set not working. However when we were wandering about on the Aletsch glacier the previous lenses went really black. It would have been impossible to see, it was so sunny and the glare from the glacier was intense. Normally the lenses responded quite quickly when out of the sun but look ages to clear. The newer ones haven’t had such an extreme test, they have only accompanied me to holidays in Devon and Cambridgeshire/Norfolk. Actually it was so windy in Norfolk I was worried about my glasses blowing away. 14
