Clue: close to the birth place of a bassist/singer of a well known local (to the square) British rock group, who died in 2009.

Toller Fratrum:

Got that from the date (stations closed in 1975). Now to make sense of the other clues... :)

Well -

There was a station in the next square to the west; the building was dismantled & rebuilt on a preserved lin in the next county

Toller station building ended up rebuilt at Totnes Riverside (Littlehempston) on the South Devon railway

....ending at an inlet of the sea in a cardinal direction

Cardinal direction =West, inlet of sea = Bay

And I posted the current one over 3 years ago. (I'm trying to stay out of this game. I waste enough time on the computer as it is!)

At approaching 1500 posts its difficult to keep track (no pun intended) of all the squares, and as said above its getting more difficult to find obscure/unused squares. Time for a new game perhaps?

You can search the topic for the nearest town/village/city district/station to your intended square before you post, and see if it turns up as having been used before. That doesn't always work, but certainly cuts down the use of duplicate squares.

OK Clue Time:

The current stock on the line is only 15 years younger than the stock it replaced.

Changing to the old 1" maps would make an interesting new game -- see: http://www.npemap.org.uk

The difficulty is that it is very difficult to find squares without visible names, road numbers, etc. Perhaps the rules could allow such items to be blanked out? And perhaps a larger area than one square would make for some interesting posts. Where is this, for example?

I like the idea, and the answer is Barnsley.  I would put up another challenge, but I'm not sure where I can get hold of copyright free bits of Seventh Series.

Hi Adrian,

They are all here: http://www.npemap.org.uk

They are OS copyright-free because they are all over 50 years old (pre 1963).

And the scans can be used: "You can do what you like with the tiles as long as you're not making any money from them." See: http://www.npemap.org.uk/tileLicence.html

See also this site on which you can flip to and fro between these old maps, current OS maps, and aerial photos, of the same location: http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

regards,

Martin.

Ah, excellent, my reading of the FAQ was that it couldn't be used.

Try this one :

post-13511-0-63314200-1373748372_thumb.jpg

The map is 1947, the colliery shown at the top (as far as I remember) closed in 1926.

Another great site for old vs modern comparison is this one http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/

It has a 'fader' control allowing mixing between modern & old maps, and a choice of modern mapping (OS, Google, Bing)

I find myself intently looking where old routes went & what the modern uses (if any) routes now have

EDIT - England is only covered by 1945-47 mapping at present, though...
