I have been working on the boiler and tried a different approach. Instead of fitting the boiler and then fit handrails etc I have fitted as much as I can to the boiler before fitting to the running plate. I know other builders use this approach so I am making no claims for originality. It seems to have worked well, I may even paint and line the boiler before fitment.

I have fitted as much as possible but not the feedwater and other pipework that runs between boiler and running plate.

Gravitiy oil feeds to,  I suspect, the steam chests show up well.

It all fits rather well to the running plate and chassis.

Those handrails look very thin, what size are they? I always use slightly overscale wire for handrails since the ball pillars are usually too big, In 4mm scale I use .5mm wire instead of the usual scale thickness of .45mm.

Yes they are thin, 0.33mm which, when they are painted, I prefer the look. The finished diameter is probably about 0.4mm or 1.2 " which is a bit undersize I agree.

I am enjoying the build though made from all those leftovers, its a bonus. I am very pleased with the performance of the chassis which goes around the tightish curves of my layout well. One of my weak points, pickups, seems to have been overcome with my efforts to give this careful attention.

Richard

The boiler assembly has now been painted. I have decided to model 755 following its GO in December 1951 when it was painted in the darker shade of BR Green (Phoenix Paint P100 BR Loco Green Pre 1954. This is a gloss paint. I shall line the boiler out using Fox King Arthur transfers.

The running plate has had its brass overlays fitted.

Hornby 30777 is in the lighter post 1954 green although given all the Hornby BR Green flack in recent months perhaps its not!.....

I will probably be out doing other things for a week or two. Our USA located daughter and family arrived today and will be staying with us for just over a week. We have not seen them for almost three years given Covid. I am sure many others have suffered similar disruptions to family life too. We are off to see them in November.

A few pictures of the boiler now that it is lined out. Very pleased with the result. Work continues on the running plate with the addition of the two reverser lifting levers.

Handrail knobs probably too long......

30755 now has its boiler assembly attached to the running plate. All seems to fit together well err, that was the plan...

The Fox transfer set for the King Arthur does not include the single orange line for the running plate and the lining for the cabside seems more in keeping with the Maunsell version of the loco than the Urie. As always, the quality of the Fox transfers is first class.

The front end of the frames will need some adjustment to clear the leading bogie wheel.

N15 hybrid kit is nearing completion with the pipework for the injectors complete. Made from scrap parts mostly although the exhaust injector is an Alan Gibson casting.

I think I might have to remove and replace the cab sheet lining, just not right!

The US part of the family have returned home and a great time was had by us all. A bit more time to spend on model railway matters. I am working on the cab area at the moment. The backplate is about finished only the spectacles to fit before fitting the cab roof on. Next will be the buffer beam and smoke deflectors and then I will have to have another shot at the cab side lining...

LIke most close ups, which are very cruel, the real thing looks fairly good!

30755 The Red Knight is just about complete. It requires a wee bit of filler here and there and then final painting. I will also consider if a little weathering is appropriate, say a day or two after returning to its home shed having done a turn or two. The tender parts are being cleaned up ready for assembly.

I went to Railex Buxton yesterday, a fairly small but really well put together exhibition. Whilst there a bought some books, tools and a very dubious Peppercorn A2 kit. I also joined the LNER Society, whom had a stand, and enjoyed chatting about P1s and P2s and the Gresley-Thompson debate. We agreed that accepting Thompson had an unfair "press" and was a good engineer with some great designs to his credit in no way distracted from Gresley's towering achievements. On this theme, Mr Churchward was undoubtly one of the greats of UK locomotive design setting the path for GWR design. But I also think that the designs of Mr Urie of the LSWR were trendsetting, certainly for powerful mixed traffic locomotive development. His contribiution is often overlooked.

Front steps and cylinder drain cocks/pipes are Hornby items to reduce risk of shorts between bogie wheels and the body.

We have been staying in North Yorkshire with family. Highlights were the Sunday Lunch on NYMR Pullman and watching the seabirds (Puffins, Razorbills, Fulmars etc) at the RSPB site close to Filey. The Gannets were just fabulous to watch.

30755 is just about complete but I thought I would show you the completed Roxey ex SE&CR Driving Trailer kit that I built for Jack Benson. My first attempt at coach building. Jack has fitted the driver and a friend of his has weathered the body and underframe to great effect.

30755 is now finished. Two small jobs remain, firstly I need to buy and affix a 70D shed plate, I have run out, and secondly the tender bogie hight washers need slight adjustment. Other than that

The Red Knight is ready to charge around the shed yard and pull a few trains.

I have used Modellers World Dark Steel Pigment for the first time. I have applied it to the smokebox and cab roof. It does give a slightly metalic tinge that looks effective. Recommended.

And now for something completley different... an ex LMS Hornby Rebuilt Patriot. I bought this a good few years ago together with a Brassmasters detailing kit. I remember the regular (regular in that we saw them on most visits to Willesden and/or Crickelwood sheds) Patriots Stephenson, REME and sometimes Bunson and nostalgia resulted in the purchase of the Hornby model. I have spent this morning fitting some of the Brassmaster parts - the chimney and dome is all wrong on the Hornby model so they were replaced.

Firstly some scanned in pictures that I took with my Kodak Brownie back in the early 1960's. Stephenson on the left at Cricklewood and REME at Willesden.

1839394824_StephensonatCricklewood.png.b3897408bb45fd26bf6f5248580cc811.png284595052_REMEatWillesden.png.de61d9ee92ab5637bdb20a0718d85523.png

Bunsen with replacement dome and chimney and some other added items, I did not want this to turn into a big project so I did not fit all the Brassmaster parts. The model will be re-numbered as Stephenson parts on order from Fox.

Presumably this runs OK? Hornby's "Bunsen" is one of the models identified as having mazak rot in the chassis in some cases - I know this particularly as my neighbour across the road had one!

If it is OK now it should be a good one, as they've been out for a while and I'd expect any fault to show after this time.

John.

P.S. Meant to mention your scans of sixty years old negs on a Brownie seem to have come out rather well, nice and clear!

Hi John,

Bunsen has been stored for 6-7 years and until the other day was unused. I could see no "rotting" and the loco ran very well on its fairly short test runs. Fingers crossed!

Thanks John, I have some more that I might also scan in. Are they worthy of unploading them to a site for the use of all?

I would say your pictures could well be of general public interest. There isn't that much real British steam, not least because of the age you need to be to have done the shots (please don't take that the wrong way)!

If you look into Flickr it is free for the first 1000 pictures you upload, so if you have a few scans  already done it might be worth a go.

Best wishes,

John.

A further diversion from my SR and LNER builds.

I was always a fan of the original Fowler "Patriots" and this coupled with my affection for those silly old b's in Dad's Army led me to buy one of the excellent Bachmann 6Ps. My late brother always insisted that we saw a couple of unrebuilt "Pats", one at Camden and another in the roundhouse at Willesden, however I can find no record as I can for the 7P versions.

The Bachmann model is generally superior to the Hornby rebuilt version although that too is a good model. The main omission on the Bachmann model are the live and exhuast steam injectors. I have added these made from unused parts from my Brassmaster detailing kit and some copper wire. The model was then weathered. The results look ok.

A largish selection of pictures.

Captain Mainwaring would have been proud.....

Richard,

I have had Bunsen on the workbench for some time, yours looks great for the changes.

Can I ask what paint you used on the dome to match the Hornby green?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry I have not replied earlier, we have been in the US visiting one of our daughters and family.

It would have been one of the two Precision BR loco Green Aerosol's P100 is the pre 1954 version but I would have used the post 1954 version on Bunsen, sorry I can't recall the code for it!

Kind regards,

Richard B
