stewartingram
I have a couple of 2BIL kits (pre-assembled) in full Southern green. I wish to move the period forward to the BR era, so which green should I aim for? (With or without SYP). My preference is Railmatch enamel. Steamport Southport
I normally use Precision. But the colour you are looking for is called B.R. Electric Stock Green (1959-66) before that they were Malachite. Often heavily varnished which darkened the colour. This is the Precision version. https://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/products/precisionrailway/nationalised/14p124 There is also this website with details of the units. https://www.bloodandcustard.com/ https://www.bloodandcustard.com/SR-2BIL.html You might get away with painting them in the BR coaching stock green which is very similar but seems to be a bit lighter. https://howesmodels.co.uk/product/br-southern-stock-green-15ml-enamel/ Jason 1
philsandy
Ford Laurel Green is a good match.
stewartingram
I'm looking to brush paint, as it is fully assembled and painted with glazing. Is it Railmatch MU Green (Later) that I want- as I use on dmus?

BR (SR) units were painted the same green as SR loco-hauled carriages. 1
Steamport Southport
I think the DMU shade is totally different, more similar to Brunswick Green ISTR. If you are using Railmatch then I would go for the BR(SR) coaching stock green. Jason 1

RMweb Premium zarniwhoop Posted March 9, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2020 The perennial "which shade of green" question. For me, railmatch 307 is in the right area. And while I'm always dubious about the colours seen in colour film from the period (greens seem to be handled very variably by different films), there are plenty of pictures showing units in paler shades.
SRman
While the BR(S) coaching stock colour should be the correct one, I find that what is supposed to be the same colour actually varies between paint manufacturers, with some (in my opinion) being a bit on the dark side. Having said that, the colour did vary a bit in real life, due to the Southern's habit of revarnishing rather than repainting, plus the variable effects of weathering and carriage washers on the finish. 1
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted March 10, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 10, 2020 Dmu green seems to have been a movable feast. The very first sets, introduced prior to the 1955 modernisation plan and a plain livery with the unicycling lion on the motor coaches, were, I think, in 'Electric Green' as used for emus other than SR which were in malachite at that time, such as the Tyneside and Shenfield sets. The 1955 dmu livery was AFAIK the same, replaced AFAIK by a lighter green by 1958. Speed whiskers and white cab roofs followed shortly afterwards, and yellow black-edged lining at waist and cantrail level. This was superceded by a darker bottle green livery and eventually the speed whiskers were replaced by small yellow warning panels; a similar livery appeared on the 25kv emus for the LMR electrification and the 3rd rail Watford and North London sets. It is difficult to be precise about dates of introduction of some of these liveries and their variations as new sets were delivered in older liveries after new liveries had been introduced; it all got a bit confusing. Photos of brand new Swindon Scottish Region 1956 Inter-City 3 car sets look as if they have an unlined version of the bottle green livery. Non of this is anything to do with 2-BILs of course, but does show that there were a confusing variety of multiple unit liveries around at the same time. The Clacton Electrics were in lined maroon, and the stylistically similar Swindon 4-car Inter Cities in lined bottle green; consistency was apsirational...
