To open out the OP's first question a little, will someone, either here or in the big wide world, reply to his inquiry without beginning with "So"?

I think I often reply to questions without beginning with the word you mentioned. So, there

Here in Oz there is currently a lot of H2O descending from the sky

Which gives me plenty of time to enjoy my toy locomotives

When not enjoying my toys I sometimes reply to internet posts like those by he whose moniker is legume like

How do you express yourself for one minute without using the letter before "B"?

So I don’t think it is possible.

John

PS my full moniker uses the forbidden letter twice so I wont print it

Doesn't even need to be a reply to a question these days, people start any sentence with the word "So". Bet it wouldn't take too long to find a thread on here that someone's started with " So I've decided to . . . ".

Not sure whether this is another way that social media has mangled the English language, or another creeping Americanism?

You've got to go for quite some time before needing to use the letter before B,

when counting, with numbers, but only spelling them, so-

three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, etc.

I doubt this is an "Americanism" per se. (Chaucer did it.)

The first known written use of so as a sentence opener is in several lines of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, published in the mid-1380s, for example:

So graunte hem sone out of this world to pace (So grant him soon out of this world to pass);

I found this take interesting.

Mike.

What?

Doesn't make sense without the 'So' at the front!

And the winner is .........

you can count out loud to one hundred and one before you use the letter  "A"  for the first time to achieve that in under a minute  you would have to be counting abnormally fast .

You are Nicholas Parsons and I claim my £5.

Nicholas Parsons would have* spelt "repetition" correctly. ;)

*Pet hate of mine - the modern trend of saying or writing 'would of' instead of the correct 'would have'. :shout: :banghead: :punish:

Ditto 'should have' & 'could have'....

Don't you need to be alive to post a comment?

Mike.

Given that we are railway modellers I would expect quite a few here aren’t. :jester:

That and "defiantly" instead of definitely.
