Except it was still the Station Hairpin then. Loews Hotel (later Fairmont) was built on the station site, the headland, and over the approach to the tunnel, after the railway was diverted.

Ah, thanks for that, I couldn't work it out in the time I had available. I have only now realised that there are two tunnels beneath the Fairmont Hotel. Are the Boulevard du Larvotto, and the Tunnel Larvotto built (roughly or directly) on the old railway alignment?

Yes, Boulevard du Larvotto/Tunnel Larvotto are on the old alignment. The only major difference is that the nice stone viaducts at St Devote and Portier have been replaced with ugly concrete flyovers.

(I discovered the old alignment by accident one day - trying to do a lap of the circuit on Google Street View, somehow it dropped me down on to Bvd Larvotto in the vicinity of the Casino and it was immediately obvious as an old railway cutting.

And 'built' is the correct word to describe Tunnel Larvotto as it's not really a tunnel in the strict sense - the hotel has been built above and around it, enclosing the road.

F1 is indeed a major polluter. But it isn't the cars that create most of it. Quite apart from the transporting of the F1 circus across the globe, criss-cross fashion, by dirty big aeroplanes, the crowds that attend every race (before 2020!) use huge amounts of fuel, much of it sitting in queues to get in and out again. Now that is something Merc, Honda, Renault et al can do something about, by offering affordable cars with other fuel sources.

Or the circuits installing a ski lift type system that you hook onto the towing hitch and they drag you in at a constant 1mph . .
It’s what makes the cars seem so fast .  :sungum:

There was me thinking that earlier declarations of policy, about Team Orders, said that there was no driver preference.....

PS.  In all honesty in the circumstances, it would be difficult to criticise, too much.

The way I read it, "him" referred to the staff member who tested positive.

I notice Vettel blamed the car after going out in Q2. Strange, as Leclerc had the same car, and qualified fourth....

And a very strong fourth. Ferrari are burning lots of midnight oil right now - good. Or is it that the current car is a difficult drive and Leclerc is finally getting hang of it? With slight concerns about the weather tomorrow, we may yet get a race worthy of the name.

I suspect the Men in Red will be getting a little more than fed up with him keep blaming the Car, when Leclerc can stick it into 4th fairly easily.

Maybe they will let this weekend go as it's his home GP, and he can show the fans that he is well past his use by date.

The Hulk in for the next Race?

OR, a mega deal paid for by Ferrari getting Sainz in early, and paying for Riccardo to go to McLaren early to get Alfonso into Renault, but giving Sainz a chance to show what he can do in the remaining Races?

I must stop having these MAD dreams.

2-day weekends do meet the green ethic, of course, which suits Lewis. But suppose yesterday's rain and fog had been today instead, or as well? F1 has an awful lot hanging on the FP, Quali, Race format. Reducing the timescale is a risk.

And whilst it's all very well for an experienced driver in the best car on the grid to say there's no need for as many practice sessions, it's the novice drivers, and the teams who are trying to catch up, who need the practice. And of course, there will always be new circuits like Portimao where everyone will need to learn the circuit.

Having fewer practice sessions will lead to less experienced drivers making more mistakes, and potentially more accidents. They will also increase the impact on a race weekend of a mechanical failure or crash damage in the car.

I'm not sure I'd define any new driver to F1 as a "novice"! New to F1 perhaps, but they will already have had experience of most (all?) of the tracks and handled the F1 car in testing for the team before being chosen, not to mention plenty of previous race experience. "Novice" to me would indicate they've no experience at all which simply isn't the case, one time when I prefer the American version "rookie" which doesn't sound quite as bad! Interesting that that "experienced driver in the best car" had rather a good first season in F1 despite his lack of experience... If you're good enough...

Friday practice really only benefits teams who have been tweaking their car between races and it will tell them if those tweaks work and if not give them overnight to revert the car to it's previous spec. That is a result of F1 banning testing sessions during the season, logically therefore they should bring back those sessions...

Or just get rid of free practice altogether!! ;)

Not to any significant degree, all the other costs remain. To minimise cost and pollution, why not hold all the races in the UK and Europe? It's where all the teams are based.

Just an idea, which the management and shareholders at FOM wouldn't even contemplate. They  want the revenue from those countries who believe F1 and other international  sport events improve their image.

(Anyone know of a tongue in cheek emoji?)

Do they have to run the Friday sessions in the same car?

50 laps in a Renault Zoe for the “novices” to learn the track would surely save a large proportion of the car related running costs of a Friday session.... ;)

I see Stroll has not felt well since Russia. On Saturday he had had major tummy trouble and knew he couldn't drive. Multiple Covid tests have proved negative. I hope he can be nursed back to health, because his season has been pretty good. I assume his Mugello crash, caused by a puncture, has not had lingering effects. The Hulk kinda benefits, but has no hope of a result worth boasting about.
