Is this a revised edition of Hugh's "British Railways Steam Locomotive Allocations" (that was originally 528 pages), or is it a revised edition of Hugh's "BR Steam Locomotives - Complete Allocation History 1948-1968" which was originally 384 pages? Or is it an amalgamation of both? Also, has there been any comprehensive revision/correction of the data? Just a tad confused at the moment... Peter Kazmierczak
Well, I've just ordered said book. I THINK it's a revised edition of the second title I mentioned, rather than the first one mentioned in the piece above. So finger's crossed... Might be only a 1,000 print run. Hope Hugh's sorted out some of the (slight) errors in the original tome. I do feel it's important that publishers and booksellers give fuller details of their offerings, as there is often less opportunity to actually see the book before purchasing nowadays. 2
Peter Kazmierczak
Well, said book just came through our letterbox. Managed to catch it as it came through the flap. I can confirm that it's a "second revised and updated edition" of BR Steam Locomotives - Complete Allocations History 1948 -1968, rather than the other book mentioned. Exactly 400 pages (previous edition was 384 pp). The small number of illustrations are different from the 1st ed. Interesting that the rrp of this edition is £5 cheaper than when the book first appeared in 2014.

I bought mine from Bill Hudson via Amazon and it is a revised issue. I get the impression from the preface that it has a fair few changes and additions. Peter Kazmierczak
After having had a look through the "revised" edition of Hugh's Loco Allocation book, I must express some disappointment. There are still the same typos from the 1st edition and some known errors haven't been corrected in the 2nd ed. I'm beginning to wonder if there are any corrections at all... is this really just a reprint?
Trade Member Strathwood Posted August 16, 2021 Author Trade Member Share Posted August 16, 2021 Another new title has arrived into the warehouse this week from Platform 5, so do take a look on our website for full details. The Railways of Manchester: The Evolution & Development of the City's Railways £40.00 272 pages lavishly illustrated with 350 photographs HARDBACK This comprehensive volume is a new history of the railway network that has grown up to serve the great industrial city of Manchester. It begins with the earliest railways built to serve the growing industry in and around the city, including both narrow- and standard-gauge railways. It then turns to the development of the main line railway network, looking at every 19th century railway company that served the city and describing the evolution that gave rise to today’s modern railway network. Chapters examine each of the following: The Railways that comprised the London & North Western Railway The Development of the LNWR The Railways that were jointly owned by the LNWR The Railways that comprised the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway The Development of the L&YR The Railways that comprised the Great Central Railway The Railways that comprised the Midland Railway The Railways that comprised the Cheshire Lines Committee The Great Northern Railway The 1923–1947 Grouping Era The Creation and Development of British Railways (1948–1997) The Closures of the BR Era The Privatisation Era Metrolink The Railways of Manchester examines the innovation and upheaval of the Victorian era, describing how different railway companies fought to gain a foothold in the city. It looks at the Grouping years, when the LMS and LNER both retained a presence in the city, and goes on to describe post-war austerity and the subsequent closures, many of which proved to be sadly misguided. Finally, the book turns to the railway of the 21st century, with its privatised operators, modern urban trams and heritage railways. As well as an historical account, The Railways of Manchester also looks in depth at some of the impressive infrastructure and the train services that have operated to, from and through the city over a period of nearly 200 years. Further chapters include: The Termini The Through Stations The Depots The Builders Steam Trains Electric Trains Diesel Trains Accidents The Present Situation Proposed and Failed Schemes Preservation and Heritage Sites The Railways of Manchester is a comprehensive account of two centuries of rail transport, providing a fascinating insight into how the railways have helped to shape this great city. The information is brought to life by more than 350 photographs, diagrams, maps and other illustrations, including many historically important images and some stunning aerial views. Many of the subjects illustrated have long since disappeared as the photographs depict scenes from as early as the 1850s. 272 pages lavishly illustrated with 350 photographs HARDBACK https://strathwood.co.uk/collections/new-titles/products/the-railways-of-manchester-the-evolution-development-of-the-citys-railways

Covers a lot of ground adequately. I would have liked a bit more depth. more maps, more photographs, more history, more of everything, etc, speaking as someone who is very interested in Manchester's railways, but this is very good single volume on the subject. Well recommended. Peterfgf
