RMweb Gold Right Away Posted October 13, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 13, 2019 There are photographs showing locking room windows of some working boxes "bricked up" in later years. Would any ex-Bobby or S&T man know what would have prompted this decision and the earliest when these changes would have been made. I'm thinking it was possibly the result of frame modernization - miniature levers etc. Or could there have been other rationale, maintenance and/or security? Fat Controller
At least some of the bricking up was done during the early years of WW2 as an air-raid precaution. 7 1
GWR_Modeller
More widespread use of electric lights and availability of the power supplies necessary to the boxes?
Pandora
Possibly as a security measure, the electrical installation standards were archaic, racks of high-voltage fuses with open contacts on the fuseholders, you would not want a trespasser let loose in such environments
micknich2003
It was a World War 11 decision, the locking room was then also an air raid shelter for the signalman, it wouldn't of course survive a direct hit but it would give reasonable protection. 2 1

Some boxes also had blast walls built outside the locking room door.
micknich2003
I presume this is an ex LNERly version of a "Blast Wall", also and unlike at most locations, the Locking Room windows have been very neatly bricked up.
