Coming back from London at the weekend, Mrs R and I had our tickets punched on the Transport for Wales leg of the journey in a novel yet charming way.

After over 50 years since the end of steam on BR, a steam locomotive is still recognised for an important task.

Some years back I had a ticket that was punched with the outline of a teddy bear (not a D95xx), but I have since lost the ticket.

It's an instantly recognisable shape, which is one reason for it remaining whenever a symbol for a train is needed. Simple symbols from diesel and electric need a bit more imagination to see, rather than being something recognisable at a glance even without context.

I believe that some Staff that check tickets have bespoke punches...…………..never had a loco as far as I know, that is lovely.

On my last journey home from Euston the ticket inspector (or whatever they are called) endorsed my ticket with the train reporting number, 1S58!
