Varnish to use over Phoenix enamel

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I picked up some Pheonix LT red for use on a Peco bus kit.

I normally use acrylic with an acrylic gloss varnish before adding transfers, but I have heard that the varnish can clash with enamel paints.

What do people recommend to use with Phoenix enamels? Thanks.

I use Klear lacquer - which is acrylic - over Phoenix enamels, with no ill effects.

John Isherwood.

As long as the previous coat is thoroughly dry, and the next coat is sprayed in thin layers, I've never had any issues covering acrylics with enamels, or vice versa.

Maybe more luck than judgement on my part, but it's true !!

Cheers,

Phil.

I've only ever used Klear once, and didn't get along with it !

Was unusual circumstances though, I repainted a 150 unit into the new GWR livery, and used Klear to seal in the transfers, then masked off to use Matt varnish to make the dull diagonal stripes. When I removed the masking it brought some of the Klear (& the transfers !!) off with it !!

Much swearing later and I'd corrected the problem, luckily there were enough spare bits of transfer on the sheet to make up the bits I needed.

The finish of the Klear looked lovely after it was applied, though once bitten twice shy......

Cheers,

Phil.
