manna
G'Day Folks For some reason or other I've only just found this thread, must have been dreaming...... Excellent work Jamie, Every loco is a learning curve, each one is different. Signals are even harder, But loved the GN six wheelers.......Beautiful. manna
Thane of Fife
G'day all An excellent thread. I've often fancied building a M1, and you've given a few tips that will assist me. Malcolm
RMweb Premium 30368 Posted June 18, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 18, 2019 Some really great work Jamie and I notice that I am not the only one with an untidy work bench, at least I know where everything is! Kind regards, Richard B

I think it was mostly due to your thread that I started building locos. My first scratchbuilt locos (J3 and O1) were inspired by the ones you’ve built. JamieR4489
I received some screws from Chris at High Level Kits today so I have managed to progress with testing the J6. As I predicted, there were a few shorting issues with the body but these were solved with careful filing and putting tape on the inside of the boiler and firebox. The loco had its first test run this afternoon and I'm pleased to say it went well. The loco is a bit screechy intermittently but I think that's because I haven't properly lubricated the chassis yet. Here you can see the loco in action: The next job is to attach the coupling rods permanently and finish off the brake gear. A goalpost coupling also needs adding to the back of the tender and the pickups need tidying up. Regards, Jamie
JamieR4489
I primed the J6 yesterday so the next thing to do will be to paint the loco and tender bodies. The balance weights need to be added and then there'll be final painting of the chassis. Regards, Jamie
JamieR4489
The J6 has been painted in my weathered black mix and the bufferbeams and cab details have been picked out in the relevant colours. Excuse the rather poor photo plank; It's just a stand from a GBL model which has been painted. Jamie 5
JamieR4489
And another one kicked off the last post. Next it's transfers and balance weights. Jamie
manna
G'Day Folks That's turned out well, a very desirable loco. manna 1
JamieR4489
Thanks Manna, I've had my eye on a J6 for a while and I didn't think it would look good if I tried to scratchbuild it. The balance weights arrived today (Markits products for a 4F) so I'll get them fitted soon. The cab and tender sides and front bufferbeam have been gloss varnished ready for transfers. JamieR4489
I'm calling the J6 finished for now. It still needs crew and lamps but I don't have any of those ready at the moment. Jamie 6
JamieR4489
With the J6 out of the way, I made a start on the D&S horsebox at the weekend. This is where I'm up to now: It just needs the brake-gear finishing off and handrails, roof and white metal castings fitting. Jamie
JamieR4489
I finished building the horsebox so I went to spray it and found that I'd used up a rattle can of etching primer. No problem, I've got another. I obviously didn't shake it well enough, though... I started spraying one side but the finish was utterly rubbish. There were loads of lumps and bumps so I had to strip the side and start again. In my haste to get it done, however, I plastered the paint on way too thickly and obliterated the panel lines. So I stripped it again Finally, I got a decent finish and called it a day at that. This is what one side looked like You can clearly see the horrible texture. This is the side that had to be stripped. It still needs quite a bit of work. Thoroughly fed up with the horsebox, I opened up the Long Tom kit and started doing a bit of research. I had no idea how much of a minefield the class was! Eventually I found a loco that had the right tender, chimney, boiler pitch, firebox, buffers, etc; It will be number 3409. This loco was fitted with a Craven's variable blastpipe which looked quite interesting to model but this was removed several years before the LNER was formed. The parts are all just perched in place as I want to get the chassis working first. I've ordered a High Level Kits Slimliner+ 54:1 gearbox as there isn't a lot of space between the frames. I might have to thin either the latter or the gearbox. The motor will be a Mitsumi one, courtesy of CCtrans (John Isherwood) and a 6'6"+6'6" tender chassis has been ordered as I don't like the idea of having to put the wheels (on pinpoint axles) in whilst building the tender, especially as I'll be using Gibson, steel-tyred wheels. Jamie Edit- The tender had been glued together by a previous owner so I pored some boiling water over it and now it is back to a kit of parts. micklner
Looking at the "brass naked" photos it looks like you haven't cleaned any/all of the surplus solder off the brass before painting ? e.g the slotted vent above one door is blocked with solder and still is in the primer photo. Primer simply exaggerates/shows all faults with any build good or bad. Always use a light primer coat, clean any faults up, then add a final layer. JamieR4489
I did go round with the fibre glass brush before cleaning the model and spraying it. Just checked the model now and none of the vents are blocked. Unless we're talking about different doors? I checked the grooms' and luggage doors. micklner
The photo with the grooms door to the right, the top vent looks blocked in the photo (s), hooever it maybe solder shining through from the other side of the horsebox in the light ?. I use Halfords primer without any problems, never seen lumps like that before. You need to clean the solder until its almost invisible to the eye. Good luck. JamieR4489
It's not blocked. It looks like it is but what you're seeing is what's through the window on the other side of the model. Thanks for the tips on primers. This is the first time I've ever had a problem with primer. It was my fault for not shaking the tin and then rushing a second go. I don't know of a Halford's near me so I just use stuff from the motor shop. Jamie
micklner
Presumably you are in the Ely area , a quick search found Halfords in Newmarket ,Cambridge, March, Wisbech and Bury St Edmunds.
JamieR4489
Well to be honest I had only really looked at places within easy walking distance. Good to know there are places nearby though, thanks. Jamie
JamieR4489
Progress on the Q1 has been quite good, due to it being the school holidays. I'm still trying to sort out a few issues with the chassis shorting on the body but apart from that the loco is running nicely. All of the white metal castings have been fitted (minus the brake standpipe that I broke off by accident) so only lamp irons, sandboxes and sandpipes plus a few other little bits are needed before she goes into the paint shop. Looking at the photos I can see a few areas that will need adjustment, filling or cleaning up. Jamie
Jon4470
Nice build! I remember ( vaguely) school holidays.....make the most of them! Jon

JamieR4489
In the week I primed the Q1 and today I finally got the motivation to put a first coat of black on. This was followed by a second coat this afternoon. Next I’ll paint the red bufferbeams and the cab detail. The moulded coal also needs to be painted. manna
G'Day Folks. Funny I had my one running yesterday, 20 wagons, round and round.......perfect. Yours looks Good, and with all that weight.......60 wagons at least. manna
JamieR4489
Thanks Manna. I haven’t been able to test the haulage capacity as the club’s layout can only hold 25 wagons in the fiddle yard but it handled those with ease and I could always pack the boiler with lead if need be.
