I thought this might stimulate something. It is intended by way of celebration of the good things that appear on here and I wouldn’t want to generate any criticism whatsoever of either the topics or contributors although gentle teasing would be OK. My selections are highly personal, based on topics I follow, my modelling interests and my take on forum life. Maybe there’s something here you’ve missed and maybe others could post their choices and highlight something I’ve missed.

Best general modelling thread

It has to be Wright Writes ably led by Tony and featuring a range of knowledgable and skilled contributors who often rectify the inexplicable bias towards the flat side of the country and green engines.

Best layout thread

This was hard and I’m showing my bias towards the LMS and four mil in selecting these contenders.

Mr Kirtley’s evocative Midland Railway which he is titivating very nicely at

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/95552-midland-railway-in-em-gauge/

The incomparable Liverpool Lime Street which the team have got to a very impressive stage now with the completion of the hotel at

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/33141-lime-street-station/

And the all new Shap layout built in record time and providing a superb setting for trainspotting

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/128568-hills-of-the-north-the-spirit-of-shap/

I think The Hills of the North has it for me as best, even allowing for the diesel appearances. Long trains on the WCML, banking and the nod to the Master Neverers.

Best eclectic thread

A highly personal choice but the Castle Aching thread stewarded by Edwardian has to be squeezed in somewhere. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but as a break from real life I do enjoy it.

Best workbench thread

I was tempted to go for Mike’s NER locos, such attention to detail and clean workmanship at

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/101015-mikemegs-workbench-building-locos-of-the-north-eastern/

but in the end I have to settle on airnimal’s S7 wagons, again clean and tidy builds but from scratch and can give anyone with plasticard, a knife and a steel rule something to aspire to

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/122168-s7-scratch-building/

Best prototype thread

Sometimes these topics come and go based on a question or a build someone is doing, but Stephen Lea’s peon to older wagons that has attracted other followers of the forgotten four-wheeler trundles along like it’s subject matter. Stephen could spot a Midland D299 in an episode of Star Trek!

Poster of the Year

Nice and contentious to end with! My pick pops up in the most unlikely places with a pithy remark, contributes helpfully to building discussions, designs his own etches, uses 3D printing, picks the most unusual and challenging subjects and occasionally makes me laugh. Stand up chris p bacon

In 2019 Dave has promised a masterclass on lining which we all look forward to although the moderators might need to be alert to some site language (as in building site, not website).
