Northern Powerhouse? Unlikely if this is true.

Recommended Posts

Went to Manchester last week.

Scunny to M60, about 65 minutes.

End of M60 to Portland St, near Piccadilly, another 40minutes.

Even worse coming out.

And don't get me started on bus lanes, one way streets, buses and taxis only etc etc etc.

Is that all?  Luxury.  In the leafy SW London suburbs we recently made the stupid mistake of taking the bus through Worcester Park.  Took 35 minutes to go half a mile.  Always a congested road at the best of times it is even worse now.  Why?  Because it is outside the ULEZ expansion zone but all the roads to the east of it are in the zone.  Improve air quality by increasing congestion.  See also LTNs.  Genius.

Too many cars on the road delaying public transport, then.

Generally speaking within Grater London generally speaking there is very little need for the use of a private motor car - and those who continue to selfishly use one deserve everything they get in terms of delays.

If there is congestion to public transport then the solution is more bus priority measures etc, not rolling back restrictions on selfish motorists!

Whilst not strictly Northern Powerhouse, the Mayor of Manchester has been discussing the Bee network and plans, this looks interesting.

More tram lines, more heavy rail under local control and tram trains.

It looks like they are thinking of reinstating the old Midland? line between Didsbury and Hazel Grove. I wonder if that means that the trains will share the lines with the trams or will they each have a single line like between Skelton Junction and Altrincham?

Tram trains so I imagine sharing the line, similarly they would like tram trains to Warrington Central and they would share with East Midland, TPE and Northern express services.  The line from Stockport to Altrincham would also go over to Tram Train and something involving Hale (another airport route perhaps?).

All very interesting and if it all comes off a very good system for Greater Manchester.

Hindley to Wigan on a tram would be interesting, they're currently (!!) electrifying Bolton-Hindley-Wigan (NW) at a snails pace. Any further details or is it just a "fag packet" plan ?

The Bolton to Leigh tram train down the old Leigh & Bolton branch is a good idea.

Andy is at least interested in Transport. Wonder when the GM Congestion charge will resurface, currently under review but all the signage & cameras are in.

Interesting to see the projected branch to Cadishead from Glazebrook. With tram curve radii, this could turn left after Irlam across the former sidings, and give an alternative terminus for the tram-trains enabling an increase in service frequency between Irlam and Manchester. It could also provide a relatively low-cost provision for Partington by providing a pedestrian route across the MSC over the old railway bridges (whereas I suspect refurbishing or renewing those bridges for tram traffic would be very much more costly, though not impossible).

Ultimately, it would be good to extend that spur over the MSC through Partington and Carrington along the old rail formation to meet the existing tram and rail lines at Skelton Junction. However, that's more of a circumferential route than a radial route, but it could link very nicely into the Stockport/Hazel Grove proposals.
