RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted November 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2018 (edited) Bought a pair of really cheap Hornby suburban coaches off eBay as spares with broken buffers, missing couplings, awful plastic wheels and deeply scratched/damaged roofs So new buffers added, new wheels, modified Bachmann couplings (now closer coupled) filled and painted roof I ended up filling the roof defects with automotive knifing putty and sprayed with automotive bumper paint....why because that’s what I had in the shed The paint looks a bit patchy but it’s still drying Not prototypical but I like them Edited December 21, 2018 by chuffinghell
Sandhole
Not my idea but a good one just the same. The bogies can be completely transformed by putting the tie-rod between the axleboxes. Study photos to get the shape right. This is the thing missing that makes the bogies look weird. My mate Coach Bogie turned me on to the tie-rod thing. He is my Obi-Wan for all things GWR as well as coach building generally, so if it is good for him, then it must be right. Nice job on the B-Set. Chris.

6892 Oakhill Grange
Brakes, steps and tie-bar and 90deg off horizontal, although the mirror effect from the glass table is quite pretty. Cheers Oakhill
6892 Oakhill Grange
Should add that fixing the undersized bolster arrangement was beyond my skills / patience / families patience (delete as appropriate). Oakhill

Sandhole
It is interesting to see that both Mike and Oakhill have done the tie-rods the same way. C.

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted November 20, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 20, 2018 (edited) Many thanks to all for the encouragement I've got several projects on the go at the moment but I'm definitely going to have a look at the axle tie bars, plus I quite happy with my window frame painting so I'm going to bite the bullet and paint them when I get a moment.........nine doors per side at 5 mins per window, so only a three hour job Edited November 20, 2018 by chuffinghell

RMweb Gold chuffinghell Posted November 23, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 23, 2018 (edited) Not great but hopefully I’ll be able to touch up any areas I’ve missed (and scratch paint off where it shouldn’t be) Edited November 23, 2018 by chuffinghell

Sandhole
I’ve had a go on a spare bogie You've made a fantastic job of those coaches. The seats are not a step too far. You can see what a difference putting that tierod in makes. C.

Proof that the Hornby suburbans can look really nice if given some proper TLC. Thank you I'm juggling a few projects at the moment as well as maintaining the work, life, modelling balance I really should do one thing at a time but its handy having something else to do while paints are drying on other projects etc Chris Edited November 28, 2018 by chuffinghell
