Caledonian
Straightforward question but the answer is seemingly unknown to Google Can anybody advise as to the actual dating of the Shaka Salt livery? Yes, I know the Bachmann model has the wording Non-Pool which suggests a comparatively late date for that particular livery, but that label aside how far back does the base livery go? 1920s or pre-grouping? Steamport Southport
I can't remember where I saw it but it was a brand name of table salt of one of the major chemical manufacturers. Possibly ICI. I've a feeling it was post Second World War though. Those vans lasted well into the 1960s. Jason
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted November 13, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2018 IIRC Shaka Salt was produced by Mangers at Stafford Common. At some time they were linked to another company in the Winsford/Lymm area.
Caledonian
Thank you gents, both, your comments provided the necessary clues which led to this: In 1950 the Salt and Alkali Company combined with other companies to form Amasol Ltd., which in turn was taken over in 1959 to become part of the British Soda Company. Amasol produced the popular “Shaka” Table Salt.
Steamport Southport
I was just going to post that. http://www.stafford-riverway-link.co.uk/History.html Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is much on the internet unless you do some real digging. When one of the top hits is this thread then you know you are struggling. I do remember there was an article on PO wagons with colour drawings of one in MRC in the 1970s. It might be December 1973. http://www.magazineexchange.co.uk/model-railway-constructor-magazine-december-1973-issue.html I think there was a photo in one of the Bill Hudson books. RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted November 13, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2018 There's a Lightmoor Press book on the Stafford and Uttoxeter Railway. There is an index on the web which has several references to salt works. Brine extraction was banned at Stafford due to subsidence in 1970.
