SouthernBlue80s
Well I headed off to Barrow Hill for my first visit. I loved the atmosphere and the smells of the roundhouse. It was also nice to see the site being used as a mini works. I had a nice chat to a few folks up there and pie and chips in the cafe. I will now visit once a year. Have any of you folks any other suggestions for places to visit, that have some atmosphere and some BR blue traction. Cheers Steve A couple of pictures from my day out
APOLLO
The East lancashire Railway at Bury is always worth a visit, as is the Ribble Steam railway at Preston. They are local to me and I try to visit annually. http://www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk/ https://ribblesteam.org.uk/ I only visited Barrow Hill once, back around 1970, a busy shed back then. It's on my list of places to visit. Brit15 Edited October 25, 2018 by APOLLO
luckymucklebackit
Only thing about the East Lancashire is that the depots are out of bounds so unless the stock is in sidings at the side of the line you cannot see them, if you want "access all areas" then the Midland Railway Centre is the best Jim
APOLLO
Yes, best to visit the ELR on a Diesel day or Gala. Brit15

Midland Railway Centre is indeed good if you want to wander around plenty of locos on shed. Great Central in Loughborough is also good. Lots of static diesel & steam stock to see & being the only preserved line with mainly double tracks, has the best service too. SouthernBlue80s
Given your suggestions and the fact I like looking at the locos on shed. The Midland Railway Center will be next port of call in about two weeks time.
Steamport Southport
If you like DMUs then I would recommend the Llangollen Railway Heritage Railcar Gala. A great day out going up and down on DMUs and usually a guest or two. The diesel and steam galas are good too, but for some reason I really enjoy the railcar gala. RMweb Premium Steven B Posted October 26, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 26, 2018 Another vote for the Midland Railway Centre. The Railway Museum outpost at Shildon has more atmosphere than the main museum in York and is worth a visit. You can also get around the sheds at the National Tramway Museum in Crich. Guest
I would go for Midland Railway Centre as well. Just a shame there are so many less locos then there used to be
