Which speaker for Bachmann Alco RS-3?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have the 63902 Alco RS-3 CP #8438. The sound itself is excellent, however the speaker has started to rattle and sound cheaply which is why I want to replace the speaker with a new/better one. I cannot find any info though, about what speaker I need. I don't want to get one with the wrong resistance and destroy the decoder.

Does anybody know what speaker is installed?

Can you not just put a meter on ohms across the speaker? (Disconnect it from the board first)

Was what I always used to do with guitar cabs where the label was either missing or uninformative (more important with valve amps as they're tuned for a particular output, rather than a minimum, but I'll eat everyone's hat if there are valves in a model loco audio...)

I'll try that when I get home. I just wasn't sure if that would work if the speaker is faulty.

Dear Max,

For a replacement speaker, I strongly reccomend checking out the offerings by Scale Sound Systems

https://www.scalesoundsystems.com/

These have been designed by a Professional Audio Engineer (who's also a serious model RRer),
and have been consciously and empirically designed with a flatter/more-even frequency response,
with both audibly and measurably more bottom-end. They are also engineered as-far-as-possible to "drop-in fit" into specific models, making upgrade as easy as possible.

I can't see a specific-B'mann-RS-3 offering (yet),

but there are B'mann S2/4(switcher)

https://www.scalesoundsystems.com/product-page/Bachmann-sound-value-s2-s4

and Atlas RS-1 offering,

https://www.scalesoundsystems.com/product-page/atlas-master-rs-1

which could well be a simple tweak to match...

(worst case, send SSS main-man jt burke an email asking about a B'mann RS-3 offering...)

Happy Modelling,
Aim to Improve,
Prof Klyzlr
