Popular Post LNER4479
Another working visit yesterday; always a pleasure. Not terribly exciting but nevertheless records that the last piece of baseboard construction for the terminal station is now complete, leaving this tempting length of trackbed to be covered by platforms and lots of complex pointwork. With that complete, efforts are now concentrated on the station approach pointwork, to be laid out on an approx 5ft radius curve. Here, the first pointwork has been fishplated and positioned but not yet fitted for keeps. Tiny changes of angles here can make a huge difference further round the curve, so important to take time to get it right. View the other way shows the station headshunt, top right, so that all shunting stays clear of the mainline. Popular Post LNER4479
It occurred to me, in relation to the start of fresh tracklaying, that the previous posting of the trackplan has now been lost following the server crash. Hence enclosed below, so as you can see how the main station is intended to look. Added since is the diesel stabling / fuelling point which will be on the outside of the approach curve - the eagle-eyed might notice the additional point in the headshunt which will now lead into this area. Peter Kazmierczak
Just found this thread; looks a really interesting project. Especially like the colliery bit. A couple of thoughts on the track plan: 1. Don't forget a trap point at the exit from the carriage sdgs, and another from the middle run-round road in the station. 2. Wondering why the station headshunt goes off in a straight line by the wall on the right of the plan. Wouldn't it usually curve round to run alongside the running lines? 1

Only just noticed this - obviously just a (non) slip of your pen but, going clockwise from the removable section, where do the main lines cease to rise? Presumably at the station junction? What are the actual gradients involved? Thanks.
John76
Will you be 'bending' the points to fit the 5ft radius?

Wondering why the station headshunt goes off in a straight line by the wall on the right of the plan. Wouldn't it usually curve round to run alongside the running lines? Thanks Peter, Various details are different compared to the plan (inevitably). Ideally, I'd have liked the headshunt to continue round the curve as an additional running line on the outside and connect directly with the carriage sidings, with a crossover connection at that end. But that would reduce the radius of the main up/down lines that bit further - it's challenging enough as it is to try and maintain a nice sweeping curve into the station. So - yes - some sort of trap arrangement will be necessary; better news down the other end however. Once 'on site', I realised there was an extra 15" to play with down that side and the headshunt has indeed been installed alongside the running lines and terminates shorter round the curve than the plan might otherwise imply. See photo below. 10

This is to give Barry as much headroom - well, arm-room more like - in his fiddle yard as possible. I think it tops out at 114mm height difference. Gradients fairly gentle on the mainlines though, no worse than 1-in-100, if memory serves. The steep gradient is the climb out of the fiddle yard, which might be something like 1-in-40 once on the straight. Logic being that they do that only once and can be assisted if worse comes to the worst; it's more important that they can lap without too much difficulty on the mainline. 1 hour ago, John76 said: Will you be 'bending' the points to fit the 5ft radius? Already in hand - that single slip pictured has already had the 'treatment'. 6
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted November 9, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2022 The layout as is has a handy property. Yesterday "Leeward Islands" normally used on the "Lakes" on Shap was brought in for a service. New pick ups fitted and the mainline used to sort out a mysterious short. Once completed the loco has gone back with Red Leader for use on Shap at Manchester Show. Lots of thanks for all of the hard work from Red Leader. The colliery will be home to my very extensive kit built Industrial fleet. Baz

RMweb Premium Barry O Posted December 29, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 29, 2022 Progress on the layout is ongoing. Cork has been laid and painted on the Station/Diesel Service Centre/ Goods Yard/ Carriage sidings. Bit stuck now until track laying is completed. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted May 2, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2023 Since returning from a 3 month tour of Singapore Australia and New Zealand, some progress has been made on the layout (as well as some stock fettling!). A bit of scenic work no less.. but it all needs completing. Coaling tower is being weathered... And the wall along the hinged section is on situ and has had a bit ofcweathering done.. a lot more to do! Wiring has been on going and a final connection or two for the "black" section should see trains being able to arrive and depart from the goods marshalling yard. Hopefully that will bevdone this week. A date has been agreed for another visit from @LNER4479 to lay the station track and complete the diesel yard... then I need to build the control panels and wire them up! RMweb Gold farren Posted May 2, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2023 That’s looking suitably grubby there, with an array of indistinguishable black locomotives. I do like the neglected atmosphere of steam in BR days.
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted May 2, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2023 Lovelely and dirty. It's not good to be a clean modeller😎. I haven't built a control panel since 2005. 2

RMweb Premium Barry O Posted May 20, 2023 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2023 Preparations are now well in hand for the next visit of Red Leader @LNER4479.
