LNER4479 Posted August 6 Share Posted August 6 Yes, fun n games yesterday 🤓 Adding the extra piece of board to the side of the station was easy enough. But some fool designed a colliery to sit on top of the far end of the fiddle yard.🫣 It starts with a datum. This is the support piece peeking up behind the loco, being the minimum clearance point on the rising mainline gradient. From that, the rest of the supporting battening can be based. Now with the colliery board in position. Plan is for 3 roads, quite a bit of space to spread out the coal wagons. Further round, this is now the supporting structure for the headshunt, which will go right round to above the tunnel mouth. This will be sufficient for an industrial loco and 6 coal wagons. And now this is how it'll all be linked together - a rising gradient from the exchange sidings. It's 3 foot radius up a fierce 1-in-20 gradient ... but it's only max 6 wagons and Barry has plenty of chunky industrials to choose from (plus it's empties up the hill anyway!) Tortuga Posted August 7 Share Posted August 7 (edited) Scenes from the Past 37, part 1: Whaley Bridge to Friden has photos of a couple of shunting locos and a string of mineral wagons on the Grin Branch c.1948 (according to the captions). The wagons seem to be from a mix of different users and I’d assumed they were pooled vehicles being used to move the products from the quarry, but your information suggests they might be being used to bring coal in for stockpiling? (Apologies to Barry O for thread drift!) EDIT: Now I’m home and have had chance for a quick look in the book mentioned above, I can maybe add clarity to some of the above. However, I’ll do so on my Alsop-en-le-Dale thread (link in signature), rather than distracting from the progress on Leeds London Road! (Further apologies to Barry O!)
