huw_capper
Hello all and apologies if this has been covered in a previous topic but after having searched I couldn't find it, my question is this, based in an oo gauge layout what do people use for the orange cabling which comes out of the trunking and goes underneatg the railway tracks, is it simply orange wire? If so what size wire? Or is there another alternative, thanks in advance Huw
PaulWarb
Hi I believe a supplier called Ten Commandments used to provide orange cable with their trunking kit but I understand this is no longer available (it's what I used on my last layout). How about using some 7/0.2mm orange covered wire?
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted June 21, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 21, 2018 The orange in my time was actually pipe that the cables went through. It was nominally 100mm diameter. S&T cables were black.
Allegheny1600
One of my jobs at the RTC, Derby was to watch film taken of the track and sing out "Orange pipe" and mark the time precisely so the location could be identified. Great work!!!

mwrosebury2000
I use off cuts of wire used for droppers, signals etc, I paint them with a bit of orange paint. Put them in bore ballasting, guess how I know... Mark
MartynJPearson
I made my bus wires out of 3 (solid) core mains cable, stripping the insulation from the live and neutral wires (earth is already bare once you remove the outer insulation). The inner insulation, painted orange does the trick for me.
St. Simon
Hi, As others have said it is an orange pipe, although it is now banned from being installed as new (all cables should either run in a UTX or hollow sleeper). It has been discovered that the orange piping has magical properties as when it is in place it has a fantastic invisible attraction to tamping machines which instantly turn up, tamp it and squash it ! Simon We decided after about a year of using it rather than cleating cables to the tops of sleepers that it was made in orange to give the tamper drivers had a better chance of lining up to hit it. The really expert ones could still hit it even when we attached it to the foot of the rail exactly mid-way between sleepers.
RMweb Gold ianLMS Posted June 22, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 22, 2018 Try orange strimmer wire. 2.4mm thick = 6-7" dia in OO gauge which might be suitable for cable trunking: £10 for 100m https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hamimelon-Refill-Heavy-Strimmer-Brushcutter/dp/B07DGFRWX1/ref=sr_1_cc_4?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1529675689&sr=1-4-catcorr&keywords=strimmer+wire+orange
