caradoc
Great photos of Reading Dave, thanks for posting, I was a CO2 at Reading Booking Office in 1981, although on the 25th March I was actually relieving at Twyford on an 0557-1357 shift, which IIRC meant travelling to work on the 0445 DMU from Oxford, where I lived. The previous day I had also been at Twyford but on the 1322-2127 shift, so quite a short turnround !

RMweb Gold Popular Post beast66606 Posted October 28, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 28, 2018 I attended Sheffield Uni in 1979 but found the course, Chemistry, to my extreme disliking so left after a year - I subsequently got my degree in computer science several years later - I still travelled to Sheffield a lot for the weekends - for the wine, women and song. Quite often the trains were diverted over Woodhead due to capacity improvements / relaying on the Hope Valley line prior to Woodhead closure. These are the outbound part of one such Sheffield weekend, the next batch will be the return over Woodhead (I did this several times and there will be more of both routes over time) DAS000859Chinley06/03/1981 (Wednesday)Chinley North Junction signal box and new Chinley signal box - commissioned December 1980DAS000859 by Dave Skipsey, on Flickr DAS000860Chinley06/03/1981 (Friday)Chinley North Junction signal box - abolished December 1980DAS000860 by Dave Skipsey, on FlickrDAS000861Chinley06/03/1981 (Friday)Chinley North Junction signal box and new Chinley signal box - commissioned December 1980DAS000861 by Dave Skipsey, on FlickrDAS000862Edale06/03/1981 (Friday)Edale signal boxDAS000862 by Dave Skipsey, on FlickrDAS000863Edale06/03/1981 (Friday)Edale Up IBS home, lever 16. Back in the 1970s the Holy Grail of our office was to get in a 'Double Clock Face' Sunday, following a 12-hour Saturday. If you managed it you could make a week's money in a weekend. leopardml2341
Thanks for posting the 'Woodhead' and Sheffield Vic shots Dave, brings back memories o' mi youf. I can (just) remember travelling from Sheffield Vic to Manchester via Woodhead on a scheduled passenger service, didn't do the journey often and the one that sticks in my mind was travelling in (what I now know to be) an ex LNER Thompson coach. It was the white oval toilet window that looked so 'different' to a then 5 year old. Keep 'em coming
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted October 31, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 31, 2018 76s. Managed to see them all (that were surviving) in one day on one occasion, probably 1980 as I passed my driving test in late 1979 and spent most weekends shed bashing across north and central England. Possible by doing Rotherwood, Wath, Guide Bridge and Reddish on a Sunday. And a quick check in at Tinsley as there were sometimes a couple there. Seem to remember there used to be quite a few London- York- London trains which terminated in York, all Deltic hauled after they had been taken off other trains by more HSTs being available.
