Lacathedrale
Thanks @BlueLightning - my thought is that my layout could be reasonably backdated to the mid-Stroudley period - the only major differences would be about half of the stock. Given the scarcity of the Dapol Umber A1, or Bachmann Birch Grove - I've decided to pull the trigger.

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted February 26 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 26 Umber was attractive enough in its own right, but almost all the locos lost their lovely names when it was applied. And many new locos, e.g. the Atlantics, didn't even get names in LBSCR days. What other UK railway had hundreds of humble but delightful tank engines with names? None that I know of. 4

None that I know of. The application of painted names is pretty much a Stroudleyism which he picked up or invented during his short stint on the Highland. His right-hand man Dugald Drummond introduced it on the North British but the Caledonian directors evidently weren't amenable to the practice and he seems to have made no attempt to revive it on his return to high office on the South Western. On the Brighton, it was perpetuated by the elder Billinton, who was very much Stroudley's protege. On the Highland, Jones continued the practice so it was there ready for Perter Drummond to exploit to great effect - but not on hordes of tank engines. The main-line exceptions can be counted on the toes of a sloth, I think: Dunalastair and Cardean on the Caledonian; Princess of Wales on the Midland; Petrolea on the Great Eastern. Lots of contractors' and minor railway locomotives, though?

burgundy
7 hours ago, Oldddudders said: What other UK railway had hundreds of humble but delightful tank engines with names? None that I know of. At the risk of straying back onto the E tanks, the names from mainland Europe were allegedly chosen to advertise the relaunch of the continental goods services after the Franco Prussian war. Many came from the territory of the Brighton's French partner, the Chemin de fer de L'Ouest, but, unaccountably, Chateau Oldudders at Le Mans seems to have been overlooked. 🙂 Best wishes Eric 2
Rapido staff Popular Post rapidoandy Posted February 29 Rapido staff Popular Post Share Posted February 29 Rapido Trains UK in conjunction with the Brighton Circle are pleased to announce an all-new livery for our forthcoming E1 0-6-0 tank. Locomotive No.110 (now preserved at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway) will now be available in Marsh-era goods black livery with double red lining suitable for between 1912 to the locomotive’s sale into industry in 1924. Whilst there had been previous plans to offer this livery with another retailer the plans fell through, and the livery was not retrospectively added into the standard range. After a recent approach from Brighton Circle, Rapido Trains UK have agreed to offer this livery to modellers– subject to enough orders being placed prior to the orderbook closing date in early April. The model will only be available direct from Rapido Trains UK via their website on behalf of the Brighton Circle who will donate the profits to LB&SCR-related preservation projects. A minimum of 100 orders will be required for the model to proceed. Both DCC Ready and DCC SOUND versions will be available. With a new livery being added to the E1 there is no better time to be a Brighton modeller – keep your eyes peeled for further projects in the future or sign up to the Rapido Trains UK Newsletter to find out the latest announcements. Rapido Trains UK would like to thank the Brighton Circle and its members for their encouragement, help and support with this and future projects. You can order your model of 110 by clicking the link below: E1 No.110 Marsh Lined Black – Rapido Trains UK It is worth reiterating again - this will only go ahead if enough orders are placed. If you were one of the people that asked me for one - now is your chance! 19 3
lbscfan
The Brighton Circle is delighted to have played a part in this very last minute and very short notice addition to the Rapido range of E1 tanks. We are enormously grateful to Andy and the team at Rapido for their very rapid and positive response to what was my wholly opportunistic approach to them as recently as the Tonbridge Show less than two weeks ago. That led to a flurry of emails and a further meeting at the Glasgow show last Sunday at which Rapido made the proposal that you now see. We agreed the identity of the model and the artwork for the lining and numbering yesterday. Andy’s announcement was agreed late last night. Here the proposed model now is, four days later. This must set some kind of record, and you will excuse us if we are a little breathless with excitement that it actually might now happen.. We were aware from comment on this forum and also from within the Circle itself and our associated and ever swelling Facebook group (now six times our size and still growing!) that there was considerable regret that the Marsh black livery was not represented in Rapido’s range. The order deadline for this model is fast approaching. Rapido’s suggestion that we look for a prototype that conformed with one of their existing tooling suites and which survived through to grouping in this livery led to the happy result that the best choice was No 110, the sole survivor of this class. We had already been able to assist Rapido in the early stages of the design of this project , and we have provided the artwork for the lining and numbering that you see on the render. Rapido have asked us to assist with the liveries for the range and we are giving them colour samples and lining and lettering artwork for all the LBSC engines and advising on the livery of the other versions. Stroudley liveries and his colour choices are complex and not easy to render in model form, and the goods green livery will be a modelling first. We will give it our best shot and we very much hope the end product will be one you all approve of. Please though be aware that the production of this additional livery is entirely dependent on the response from those of you who have said you would like to see one. The Circle’s resources would not stretch such that we could offer to commission this model and bear the commercial risk. I doubt many railway societies could. By using an existing tooling suite and applying a different livery, the project is viable with as few as 100 models produced, but it will only happen if those orders are there in time for the order deadline in April. The Stroudley version of the E1 is the prettiest of all of them and looks splendid in almost any livery. You will have seen the video of the EP running on Rapido’s test track, and many of you will have seen the EP at recent shows. It will a stunning model. So please do get your orders in if you want to see it. We shall be encouraging our members and Facebook members to place orders. And, yes, in case you wanted to ask, the live link now works and I have ordered mine. And you will have noted Andy’s broad and well informed hint as to the future. He is right – this really is going to turn out to be a great time to be a Brighton modeller, as you will see from announcements yet to come. And we have already started work on gathering material for Rapido’s next project. Best wishes Nicholas Pryor, Brighton Circle Secretary 11

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted February 29 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 29 As a lifelong LBSCR-lover - grew up in Dorking - I had always expected to buy an E1, but as a lapsed Brighton Circle member, and former Steward from 40 years ago, this kills two birds for me, so I have paid my deposit. Fingers crossed there are 99 others. Hopefully 110 will see service at Chateau Olddudders, as Eric kindly describes it, which is in fact a tumbledown 1850 stone cottage in an acre of open countryside in La France profonde. But my next neighbour down the hill is actually the local Chateau!
lbscfan
And orders are flowing in from current Circle members. I know of four already in the first half hour since the announcement. We send our greetings to Olddudders - you would always be welcome back. The Circle is a broad church of lifelong LBSCR lovers, and you are allowed to be a member and live in France. Others do. JSpencer
Perfect news - I just stuck my order in for a sound fitted one and I'm not a member of Brighton Circle. This was a no brainer for me as I can use in pre-grouping days - or with a little stretch - in preserved days (I know she has not carried this livery yet, but never say never).

Perhaps if people thought of them as 'Bulleid' liveries rather than 'wartime' liveries they might sell better ........ 'sunshine' on black was applied for rather longer ( yes, including the war years ) than 'sunshine' on malachite* and to all classes of loco. I don't have the sales figures for Bulleid liveried Q1, USA, P classes etc. to hand but I'd guess the manufacturers shifted more than 100 of each. * The scope for 'new' models in malachite green is pretty limited, now.

I think they referred to World War One wartime liveries in this case. Mind you I cannot think of many Rapido RTR locos in WWI colours. And they would have hanged around until grouping I guess (or at least can go with those SECR wagons...). In anycase I have a trainload of WWI wagons so... Wickham Green too
Indeed - Rapido have got nowhere near Second War loco liveries yet* - but Andy was responding to my suggestion of 'Sunshine' lettering which dates from that period. * I wonder how well wagons with 1941 lettering sell ?
GreenGiraffe22
I suspect and remain hopeful that the D1 will appear eventually from one manufacturer or another as other prototypes are ticked off, looking forward to what other Brighton items are tucked up Rapido's sleeve, I heard rumours of one in the pipe line months and months ago. 🤐
Anglian
Ordered. It was a shame that the commissioned black E1 failed to secure enough orders to be viable – I hope this time it's a successful venture. Nice to have a bit of black to relieve the Marsh Umber.
