I wired two iPhone speakers (one standard and one small) in series.

 

Much quieter now, and the sound is clear and perfect. Much easier on the ear!  No distortion on the horns either!

 

A great result, and I shall now be doing the same my other TTS sound diesel locos.  Will also experiment with a few different twin speaker combinations wired in series, so that locos of the same class have slightly varying tones.
